PHUKET:-- A man caught on CCTV pocketing a mobile phone belonging to one of the two teenagers crushed to death by a garbage truck in Phuket yesterday afternoon has returned the phone amid an outpouring of outrage on Thai social media sites.

The incident came to light when the man, who so far remains unidentified, was caught on CCTV footage posted on Facebook showing him picking up the phone from the scene, at the entrance to Soi Palai on Chao Fa East Rd.

PSU student Potsathorn Chaijaroensup, 19, and Panitcha Mingkanitkul, an 18-year-old enrolled to begin her studies at PSU Trang Campus, were both killed in the horrific accident.

Staff at Prince of Songkla University Phuket campus, where one of the students killed was studying, confirmed that the phone, belonging to Ms Panitcha, was returned at 11:40am.

“He said that he picked up the phone because he was afraid that it might be crushed by vehicles on the road,” PSU staff posted on the Phuket Campus official Facebook page earlier today.

Of course, that's also the reason why the staff of the meat trucks empties your pockets as soon as they arrive, because they are afraid someone else runs off with it.

Yes, this practice goes on every day. I remember once when living in pattaya a long time ago and seeing a guy (foreigner) in big c north pattaya collapse with a heart attack. First thing happens is a person, young Thai, rushes up to him in a bid, I thought, to help him, grabs his bag and rifles through his pockets for phone and wallet and runs off. Disgusting behaviour in anyone's standards but will never stop.

Pond life. Still should have been prosecuted for theft even though he returned the phone.

If he hadn't been found out he would have kept it, the toe rag.

Yes, he was trying to "rescue" the phone. :coffee1:

Clearly the owner was no longer in need of it....Thai-logic.
