there seems to be a very long thread on KPN restaurants but I cannot find one on samui - can someone link me to it - or if not start one? Specifically interested in chaweng a lot of the old places I liked have changed hands or are just silly expensive now and there are a lot of new restaurants anyone got any hidden or not so hidden gems in chaweng area ?

Chawang is a "high rent district"  which is why prices tend to be much higher than other areas of Samui.... Fisherman's Village is also high because of rents etc.....

Other areas tend to be more reasonable.

You will get good food for good price in Chaweng if you wonder of the beach road, they only cater tourists.

They think they can sell crap for crazy prices because you will be gone in two weeks.

Haven't eaten on beach road for ten years.

Another tip is to ask for the men in Thai, it usually have prices 50% off.

I don't read good Thai, but know the numbers, I order my favourite dishes and get half price.

Interesting tip on thai language menus I'll check that out - there are some decent cheapish restaurants on the road that goes to the lake from north chaweng - even on beach road there's some good places kahosan resteraunt which I first ate in in 98 is still there and doing very good thai food for 90baht happy hour.

really I'm interested in anywhere anyone knows that does really quality thai food or otherwise for a reasonable price to me that's sub 150 baht for quality  - the islander is also decent for western food and been there for years - they do 69 baht mohitos and pretty high quality western food... on another note I drove up to jungle bar today fantastic views and then they served me a pad thai with two massive dead flies in it ..

Try the bottom end of the beach road after the one way system. There are a few 'cheaper' restaurants down that way. The Thai restaurant that had a bakery near to Poppies used to be quite good at a reasonable price.

69 baht for mojito that costs 13 baht to make... I have done it myself.

Yes if you want to drink at home that's fine - not sure they'd be up for you taking your homemade hooch in there though - obviously drinking out is going to be more expensive than making it at home :)

I have been manager for bars for 11 years in Chaweng, I know what it costs to make a mojito.

Hmm i think you're missing the point it doesn't matter what it costs to make it matters what it costs to buy - if you have any recommendations of any bars doing cheap ones happy to hear. I want to go out not make them at home
