Abhisit urges agencies to take action on missing historical plaque

BANGKOK: -- Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Thursday said that agencies must take action on the missing historical plaque as it is a historical item and the issue is public.

 

He said that it is not justifiable to say that the plaque belongs to only certain groups including the heirs of members of the People’s Party, known in Thai as Khana Ratsadorn, or the party itself.

 

The Democrat Party was established 10 years later than the Siamese Revolution, therefore it could not be said that Khana Ratsadorn is a predecessor of the party, which should be responsible for the missing plaque.

 

“This way of thinking, of finding who actually owns the plaque, Khana Ratsadorn, their heirs, or our party, could be misleading and only causes frustration in the public,” said Abhisit.

 

He urged people not to politicise the issue.

 

The disappearance of the plaque ignited a big dispute in Thailand between pro-democracy citizens and the state authority and royalists. The plaque was fixed on the grounds of the Royal Plaza in 1936 on the spot where People’s Party leader Phraya Phahonphonphayuhasena stood to announce the end of absolute monarchy, paving the way for a constitutional monarchy.

 

While activists wanted the authority to conduct an investigation to find the missing plaque and prosecute those who had replaced it, police and government officials argued that they did not own it, and the plaque had no historic value to necessitate an investigation or prosecution.

You got a lot to learn.. you can't compare something posted online (falls under the computer crime act) with an interview.. its different. So he can't be charged with the same crime. 

 

Its good that he voiced his opinion on this its totally crazy that they removed and replaced it. Its falsifying of history (happens elsewhere too) but should be dealt with if encountered.

It'll probably take years, if not decadws, to get to the bottom of this story. Who replaced it? Why? Where is the original now? etc. 

The plaque went missing during the Sarit regime and mysteriously found its way back again, so maybe again it will mysteriously reappear. Although don't think they actually replaced it last time.

You got this right. Maybe a call up for attitude adjustment or maybe no. He really has to respond immediately not weeks after the democracy activists have raised the issue. Show his insincerity.

If it were treated like a regular theft or vandalism case, then there would have been little furor.  But when the police, junta and the fine arts department all started acting very odd and dismissive, then people began to suspect some sort of political shenanigans.

Agree with you. According to the small guy we all should not talk about the subject, it is even now banned to take photo's of the fake one. Srisuwan Janya was "arrested"/taken away by the military for showing up at Government house and asking about the theft. This was done some or other law or by brute force but not under the computer crimes act. A good opinion piece in BKK Post today by Wasant.

I commented many times on this and other topics regarding this plaque.. in each i condemned it and I still do. I don't agree with everything the junta does, I never have.. far from it. Do agree with other things but not with this and stuff like the subs and the  non action on the nephew of pm and his brother (sure I am forgetting other stuff I dont agree on).

 

This is just totally wrong, and should not have happened.

Or as in this case grows a backbone and then loses it in the same statement.

 

To be fair Abhisit knows exactly what's going on here so I empathise with his overall blandness.

While I would side with Abhisit - if I were Thai - it remains a fact, that the history is usually written by the winners. In 1932 as well as today it is, co-incidential or not, the men in green .........

With the upcoming election he has to keep his portrait in the forefront from time to time. He is not choosy which vehicle he uses.

They're saying the same thing though, so if one isn't charged (and quite rightly so) then neither should the other be. 

 

 

This whole debacle reads like a frat house prank.  Ridiculous.

This was done by ultra royalists, and it is the ultra royalists that are backing this junta, hence the total inaction.

Good for Abhist plus all those other parties, struggling to seek answers.

Thai nationals, (SHOULD), have a right to know!

The plague is good as lost but history will not.

Not really. This is exactly the glib statement you would expect from the armies pet politician.  Expect very little from Abhisit and you won't be disappointed.

There is a good article on newmandala.org about this incident and who is most likely behind it. After reading it everybody will understand why it can't be discussed and no Government agency wants to do anything about it. 

Thais know Thais.  They require a firm hand.  If left to their own devices, elected governments will eventually implode, be dissolved, and continue the established cycle.    And so, after 80 odd years, it's time Thailand quit pretending, give up the failed experiment and go with what feels more natural - communism.  Communist "Light".  And just get on with it.

 

The new plaque says it all.  The idealistic, imported system of government doesn't work here and should no longer be the primary motivation.  Only that the people are "happy".  As long as everyone is "happy", that end justifies the means. 

I love the way the NCPO has asked "all sides" to stop asking to see the CCTV footage in the interests of "national reconciliation".
