PHUKET: Newly-appointed Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong says his first priority is to beautify Phuket.

Earlier this week, the governor held his first ‘media meet’ since his arrival on the island on April 10, to lay out his plans for Phuket.

On April 4, ex-Phuket Governor Chokchai Dejamornthan was transferred out after six months on the job, with Gov Norraphat – previously Provincial Management Adviser at the Office of the Permanent Secretary of Interior – being named as his successor (story here).

This project was named by the governor as "Beautiful Phuket by our Hands" or Phuket Suay Duay Mue Rao.

“Cleanliness is the very first impression we present to anyone – we must ensure that Phuket is always clean so that we remain in line with our image as a world class tourist destination,” said Gov Norraphat.

Phuket is not and never will be a world class tourist destination, in the true sense,  unless he means a low class tourist destination. It is now and will always be over crowded, over priced, dangerous and dirty. There are a few lovely places I know on the island but they are being discovered by tourists now.

They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot. You don't know what you have till it is gone. Thanks Joni Mitchell

Remember when a previous Governor did this by having Palmyra Palms planted the length of Thepkassatri Road? There must be about ten left but it was a lucrative contract for a friend I'll bet.

Beautify the island by clearing up traffic and parking issues- another soundbite presentation with little substance.

Lets not address the main issues in case it upsets 'influential people'.

How about the sea water quality, how is that these days.

Beautify bigly!  That's right, folks.  We're going to make it soooo beautiful, after a while, you'll be tired of it being so beautiful all the time!  Believe me!

And then make the pig fly.

Its good to see a new no-nonsense Governor, who knows how to prioritise with a 'can do' attitude who is here to sort out Phuket's problems once and for all!

Now lets see, the most important thing that needs doing right away is...?

To beautify Phuket - Way to go Gov!!

Nice idea so best transfer ownership of the Island to another country as it is the only way it will happen

Underground cabling?

That is already in hand.

I think beautifying Phuket have been on-going for a long time, now get away the last vegetation and get us some more concrete.......

Forget it, Phuket is too developed and has lost its magic. In the next few years, you will struggle to find any countryside left.
