Country needs long-term military supervision, says Prawit

BANGKOK: -- In a bid to solve Thailand's "unique" problems it is necessary to have military commanders oversee a long-term national strategy, said Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan on Monday.

"Previous problems stemmed from misunderstandings," Prawit said. "Those military chiefs will help provide opinions on panels, with academics to counterbalance them."

Prawit referred to the national strategy bill draft, which stipulates the committee made up of the prime minister, his deputy or another minister, the presidents of the Upper and Lower houses, experts, as well as five military commanders and a permanent secretary of the Defence Ministry.

According to the bill draft, the committee would be authorised to work on the 20-year national strategy, which would oblige any Cabinet to follow it and report its performance to Parliament.

While the bill draft reasons that this body is needed to align government agencies in this process, the public wonders whether the military-dominated committee could influence future governments in their policy-making.

However, Prawit insisted the bill draft merely provided a broad strategy-mechanism framework and was flexible in future contexts.

"National strategy needs to be driven by all parties, whether the military, people or academics," he added. "There will be only five or six military heads there just to make sure that all blocs can move forward together."

He basically is saying that while he and his army buddies may allow some form of elections at some point, that surprise, surprise, he will not be letting go of the power.

4) All of the above, plus every dictator who wanted to stay in power, knowing that they would never win a popular election.

Thailand's problems are not unique. The poor are fed up but have been so conditioned through lies and propaganda.

The rich simply don't wanna give an inch. Therefore, the rich have to use guns to control the population.

It's incredibly simple.

They said it several times already but slightly differently:

"This was the last coup..."

"There won't be anymore coup...."

"Cos we are not going away"

Happiness.... :saai:

At least he's open and honest about it; clearly no shame and feeling emboldened.

Suspect there will be some walking back tomorrow; he'll claim that the press didn't understand what he meant.

And one of the "unique" problems facing Thailand is of course that the military just cannot stop meddling in politics. But I doubt piggy face would include that in his list.

Too bad we are not allowed to use the d-word (describing a certain form of authoritarian government) in this forum and elsewhere, because even the truth has now become illegal in Thailand.

Yes, Thailand's major unique problem is a military establishment that has forgotten what a nation's military organisation's sole responsibility is in a democracy: to uphold and preserve the integrity of a nation's democratic system and the government elected by the people to carry out their wishes.  By its very nature a military organisation comprises personnel whose skill strengths revolve around use of force to impose their will on others, as well as ability to cause damage or destroy an enemy's national assets, and otherwise  cause harm to their designated enemies. Their activities are dedicated to destruction, confusion by deceit and mayhem. I cannot make an assessment of the Thai military because I've no idea how they have fared against Thailand's external enemies (do they have any?) or any well-armed and organised opposing force. They must be good in some conflict situations because every military figure I see on tv is festooned with baubles, ribbons, wings and other military paraphenalia. I just cannot see how they've managed to conyince local citizenry of their attributes after 60-70 years of planning coups and setting up new rules to help their cause for control over the local populace each time. But what genuine positive achievements can this crop of do-gooder militarista claim for themselves to justify any credentials of  democratic integrity and benevolent, honest cjvic administration?  The statements contained in this current press release do nothing, in my opinion, to help the current regime gain respect or endorsement from any western liberal democracies. They seem to keep digging a deeper hole for themselves.  The prospects of Thailand ever  freeing itself from the greatest burden holding it back from progress continue to dwindle.

The biggest misunderstanding is that the army will solve any of the social and political problems of Thailand. Bye Bye democracy for a long time. Hello Computer Crime Act, Defamation Laws,Thai Penal Code, Sec 112 and Article 44 the pillars of democracy, freedom of speech and human rights.

A sad state for the country....those that banked their future on a new era will be bitterly disappointed......Thailand is now going to be governed by a continuance of oppressive military rule for the next decade or more..

God helpThailand, because nobody else will!

Is there a competition for story telling going on out there at the moment? if there is This one will win it that is for sure.

Here you have a bunch of guys who have never done anything in their lives and would be the first to run and hide if the s>>> hit the fan, telling the world that the place has a unique problem and expect the world to believe them.

The world knows they are the problem and have been since 1932.
