WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said China may have hacked the emails of Democratic officials to meddle with the 2016 presidential election, countering the view of U.S. intelligence officials who have said Moscow orchestrated the hacks.

In an interview transcript published on Sunday, Trump gave no evidence backing his allegation, first made on the eve of the Nov. 8 presidential election, that China could have hacked the emails of his rivals.

"If you don't catch a hacker, okay, in the act, it's very hard to say who did the hacking," the president said in an interview with CBS "Face the Nation." "(It) could have been China, could have been a lot of different groups."

The hackers roiled the presidential campaign by making public embarrassing emails sent by Democratic operatives and aides to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. One email showed party leaders favoring Clinton over her rival in the campaign for the party's internal nomination contest.

Trump has been dismissive of the statements by intelligence officials that Moscow hacked the emails to help Trump win the election. During the Sept 26 presidential debate with Clinton, Trump said China was one of many actors that could have been behind the hack, including "somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds."

Like Russia, China is a longstanding cybersecurity adversary of the United States. Trump in recent weeks has softened his criticism of Chinese trade policies as Washington seeks Beijing's support in diffusing military tensions with North Korea.

Before Trump was elected, he pledged to improve relations with Moscow. Russia has denied any involvement in the hacks. Lawmakers are currently investigating whether Trump's campaign team had ties with Russia.

Back to his deflections.   The Chinese would have been much happier with Hillary in power than Donald.   The Chinese, if they did, would not likely have released them.   They are much more cunning than that.

He has 17 agencies telling him the Russian's were interfering in the election.   Is trying to tick off every country.

Yes. His mouth engages before his brain does, then he's still hopeless because he's an idiot.

It is clearly very difficult to explain to an idiot, that some sort of evidence is generally expected when you make outrageous claims, especially when said idiot has a long track record of disgraceful lies.

I don't think China necessarily preferred HRC.  I think Chinese officialdom had a similar outlook as Russia; the didn't like HRC because she wasn't shy about speaking out about human rights and other abuses - seen in other countries.   Trump, in their view (Chinese and Russian views), was a clown businessman who was/is mostly unknown quantity.  They, like us, didn't think Trump had a snowflake's chance in Hades to get elected.

If Trump wasn't prez, his mouth farts wouldn't carry any more significant than Ronald McDonald's.  But because Trump is prez, the press corps and everyone else are obligated to sit up and take notice.

In the old days, when Trump would appear on one of the late night talk shows, the audience would laugh, as if they were being entertained by a pompous trick pony.   Unfortunately, enough rednecks in the US took the trick pony seriously, and now Americans are in deep pony doo doo.

Time for trump to go.

The problem is that opposition is focusing their efforts on him personally and that only serves to strengthen his base. They are not so much supporting him as they are railing against what they see are 'elites' plotting against them (and reinforced every night when they watch Fox news).

As painful as it will be, they need to challenge him on his policies and in the event he is successful in implementing them, let the economy dictate whether he loses support in 2020. If he is successful, then the country will have benefited from his policies as a whole, if he is not then he will pay the price and his support will erode.

Right now, all the left is doing is galvanizing his support and making it easier for him to blame policy failures on them, which he is already setting up to do.

Our country will survive this if and only if, we stop trotting out people like Hilary Clinton to tell everyone "I told you so"

Playing right into his hands.

You will find most Chinese support Trump and did prior to the election and during. This is every Chinese businessman's dream to end up as pres but they obviously can't buy it or get elected in China. You got to read Weibo here not the Western media channels.

You mean Weibo, the Chinese version of Facebook? This is your idea of an authoritative source? Got any numbers to back up your assertion?

First, China is not a democracy so what the 'people' want and what the government wants are two different things.

Second, the perception towards Trump changed after the visit by the PM of China.

It'd be good to see the GOP members of congress (as a party, not just the occasional individual) hold trump accountable to the things he says

It looks like he's not pointing the finger at the Chinese as much as he's saying we don't really know who it was.  Maybe the Russkies, maybe the Chinese, maybe someone else.

We'll know more when Wikileaks gets a hold of the juicier memos.

This article is more fake news. What he said was that if you don't catch a hacker in the act you can never be certain who the hacker was. He then said for this reason the DNC hackers could have been Chinese instead of Russians.

If you look at Vault 7 revelations what he said is true because the CIA use a technique whereby they leave codes which implicates other countries when they hack foreign entities. The Russians and Chinese do the same. Only a total idiot amateur hacker will leave a code trail. All state sponsored hackers are true pro's and the whole DNC hacking story reeks of a false flag event. Assange on a number of occasions said that the DNC info came from inside the DNC but the Russian haters don't want to believe the truth because the alternative give when reason to go to war again.

He is the President of the United States, conspiracy theory, senseless speculation without backup and going against the security agencies is not very presidential and is potentially very dangerous.

Which is exactly what is said in the article.

Sorry, but you have to read in order to determine news correct or not.

It's not as if stellar diplomacy over the past 30 years has gotten us (Edit: the 99%) anything but the crap end of most trade and defense agreements.  Maybe it's time to listen to Einstein and try something different.

Not a Trump fan, BTW.  I'm in the Mark Cuban camp...calling him political chemotherapy.  http://edition.cnn.com/2017/04/21/politics/mark-cuban-donald-trump/

That said, I think he's done the ordinary citizens of the USA a huge service by paving the way for citizen politicians (like the founding fathers envisioned).  I wish it were someone almost anyone besides Trump, but he's the one that suited up and took the playing field, and kudos to him for that.  I just hope he doesn't leave a smoking heap behind.

No, how about Trump paid for hacking by Russians and Putin organized like the British says. Tired of hearing all Trump's lies. Either resign or impeach the SOB. The world doesn't need more dictators and that's all Trump is interested in along with his lies.
