WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert for Europe on Monday, saying U.S. citizens should be aware of a continued threat of terrorist attacks throughout the continent.

In the alert, the State Department cited recent incidents in France, Russia, Sweden and the United Kingdom and said Islamic State and al Qaeda "have the ability to plan and execute terrorist attacks in Europe."

The State Department's previous travel alert for Europe, issued ahead of the winter holiday season, expired in February. A State Department official said Monday's alert was not prompted by a specific threat, but rather recognition of the continuing risk of attacks especially ahead of the summer holidays. The alert expires on Sept. 1.

Malls, government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, airports and other locations are all possible targets for attacks, the State Department's alert said.

Trump doesn't want that the people of his country spend their money anywhere else, maybe the reason for this travel alert. In the US much more people are killed by guns than than Europeans killed by terrorists.

The EU should answer:

EU issues travel alert for USA because of the danger of gun attacks (since Trump opened the door for the gun lobby).

The topic is about terrorism, not guns, not car accidents, not whatever happens to jump into anyone's mind.

I thought the topic was about the USA issuing a travel alert

It's a travel alert about possible terrorism.

The next off-topic remarks gets  a nice long suspension.

If an American were to move to Europe, they'd be safer than back home.    From just about everything.

Nice troll post. Don't know much about America,  eh?

I think Winnie is American.

Don't really get the dummy-spitting from either side. This travel alert is fair enough, Europe has huge potential for terrorism right now, though reckon alerts should be in place for most Western countries.

Europe has a potential for terrorism now, whether it is a huge potential is debatable.  Statistically one is much more likely to be killed in random gun violence in the US than from any terrorist or criminal activity in Europe.

What part of the world doesn't have potential for terrorism?

Europe has been notable only because of headlines. In terms of daily terrorist attacks, the US should probably issue a travel alert for Israel. Actually it has: https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/israel-travel-warning.html

Given the worldwide threat of terrorism, the USA might as well issue a travel alert for every country where Americans might travel. Conversely, all other nations should consider issuing travel alerts for the USA.

Such as this from the Australian government?

We assess there is currently a heightened threat of terrorist attack in the United States
