Medicine after a trip to Pattaya

Featured Replies

I had intercource with a few woman in Pattaya.

I was told there is some sort of medicine to be taken like antibiotics...anybody know any drugs to buy at the pharmacy? I did take a medicine a few years back but I did not remember the name

I presume the OP is thinking of PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) to reduce the risk of HIV infection.

The drugs which are used for this (Zidovudine, Lamivudine, &c.) are all class "S" in Thailand and are only available with a prescription.  It would be necessary to make a hospital appointment to get them.

Note that PEP does not affect the changes of getting other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as herpes,  gonorrhea, and syphilis.  Best to get tested for STDs at the same time since some diseases can be asymptomatic, yet be passed on to others.

Unfortunately, some STDs such as herpes, hepatitis B,  and HPV are incurable.  It's really rather foolish not to use a condom every time if one has casual sex.

You should not take antibiotics unless you have symptoms of an STD in which case you should still not self-prescribe but rather see a doctor to ensure correct treatment There is a lot of antibiotic resistance in Thailand...and different STDs require different drugs.

If you did not use a condom and are concerned about HIV, it is possible to take a course of very potent ant-retroviral drugs  to reduce the risk of transmission provided you start within 72 hours at the very latest. (as you had 3 exposures chances are more than 72 hours has already passed since at least the first 2).  These have to be taken for a full month and have signficant side effects. It is not 100% effective and effectiveness decreases with every hour that has passed between the exposure and when you start. You can only get these drugs from a hospital or clinic, not a drugstore, and your liver function should be checked first. It is in any case very advisable to talk with a doctor specializing in this to help you make an informed decision as to whether it is worth doing, taking into account how risky your exposures were, how long ago they took place, the potential side effects etc.

For both of these things the best place to go is the Thai Red Cross Anonymous clinic in Bangkok (see pinned HIV thread for details)

Or, if still in Pattaya and not wanting to travel to Bangkok, contact Dr. Philippe Soeur (details in pinned thread)

The other risk -- greater than HIV since it is more easily transmitted - is Hepatitis B, unless you have been immunized for it. For that all you can do is be tested. The two sources mentioned above can advise on this.

For future:

Get the Hep B immunization if you have not already had it

Always use a condom

Go to one of the better hospitals and ask for PEP (Post exposure Prophylaxis) .  Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, perhaps?  You won't be the first patient they've had seeking this treatment.  The sooner you receive the treatment, the more likely it is to be effective.

Note that this only covers HIV - not gonorrhoea, syphilis, etc..  You'll need to arrange to be tested for STDs later and until then only have sex with a condom.

Condom broke. Hmmmm.  In future use condoms lubricated with noxylene 9 which kills the HIV virus. Go to the best hospital in the area. Tell them the truth and your worries. 99% chance you have nothing to worry about.. Condom broke... Hmmn.

Makes no difference.  In fact, according to the World Health Organisation:  "Spermicides containing nonoxynol-9 do not protect against HIV infection".
