Hi all,

I went to the embassy the other day to get my visa for work and they've given me a single entry non immigrant visa. I asked for a multiple entry one but they said I could extend in Thailand. However I am already due to travel outside of Thailand within ten days or arriving and other occasions after that. I have previously had multiple entry non immigrant visa and worry that I'll be held up at the airport when I'm traveling in and out of countries in the region. I'm also worried I'll have to pay much more each time I go in and out. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Where did you apply for the visa? Most nearby locations will not issue a multiple entry non-b visa.

You can get a re-entry permit to keep the remainder of the 90 day entry valid when you enter the country.

Then you can apply for a one year extension at immigration during the last 30 days of the 90 day entry if your employer and job qualify for it.

Also if you know you will be traveling at least twice in this 90 day period while sorting out the extension, get a multi- re-entry permit now, that way you will never be held up at airports. 3,800 Baht if I recall correctly.

At least 4 times, not twice. A single entry re-entry permit is only 1000 Baht.

(notwithstanding the pages used in the passport)

Extensions are 1900 baht. A single re-entry permit is 1000 baht.

Thanks all for your replies. I should have said that this is in my home country Embassy (UK). My main concern is really that I travel into Thailand for work and then have almost zero time to go to a reporting place or redo my visa in the country before I have to travel about out of the country (to Vietnam). This is even more worrysome for me if I get held up on the way back to Thailand after Vietnam as I arrive late at night and need to be back at work the following morning. I'm e tempted to go back to the Embassy in London and ask that they change it (if possible) just in hope that I'll save time (and potentially money too).

Thanks again for your help

Also I'll be flying in and out of Thailand a lot during the next 12 months so does this mean each time I come back into Thailand I'll need to pay an extension fee - if yes then that'd likely be a lot of money.

Once you get your 1 year extension sorted you will need to get a multiple re-entry permit done at the same time as well. This will get you unlimited re-entries into Thailand, and you will be stamped in until the end date of your extension every time. If you ever manage to stay in Thailand for over 90 consecutive days you will also need to do a 90 day report.

A single re-entry permit is for one re-entry and costs 1000 Baht.

There is also a multi re-entry permit which allows multiple re-entries if you  want or need at it costs 3800 Baht.

A 30 day extension  to  a tourist visa is what costs 1900 Baht.

I have done an extension and a single re-entry permit before so I know the costs.

you can get a reentry permit at the airport, i think they only offer the single entry (that's all i've ever needed so haven't asked about multi).  so you could do that to leave the country and then when you come back, hopefully, you'll have time to get a multi (you may be able to get a couple single's, then get a multi in connection with your extension application, depends on how often you plan to travel your first two months on the visa entry).

what are you saying when you say 'held up on the way back' ?  is this related to a reentry permit ?  i'm not sure i follow this one.  if you get a reentry permit at the airport before you leave, you'll be able to enter okay on the return.  you can't get a reentry permit on the return only the departure.

nb1984,

  1. are you employed by a company in the UK?
  2. Did you send your visa application to the embassy together with a letter from the employer stating that you need to travel to Thailand several times on the company's behalf during the next 12 months?
  3. Did you indicate your requirement for a multiple-entry visa on the application form?

There have been reports of the embassy in London not issuing multiple entry non-b visa if working here. They certainly will not change your single entry to a multiple.

If you have a work permit with at least 8 months of validity you can apply for one in Penang Malaysia.

Thanks all- yes I very clearly marked for a multiple entry and provided all the relevant info. Company has headquarters in bkk - not a UK company. If I can get a multiple entry in Thailand then fair enough - this just means that I'll have to get the reentry permit for Vietnam  and then try to get a multiple entry visa at some other point. The amount I'm likely to travel just doesn't make the reentry option very useful/cost effective but I guess that as I haven't any time to do anything before I fly to Vietnam I'll just have to bite the bullet. It's a shame as previously have had really good experience with London Thai Embassy. Thanks

For the trip to Vietnam a single re-entry permit would be all you need.

If you get a one year extension of stay at immigration you can get a multiple re-entry permit for a fee of 3800 baht.

You can apply for the multiple entry non-b visa visa at any time now. You don't have to wait for your 90 day entry to run out.
