Thailand has no immediate plan to suspend Facebook, regulator says

A lot of businesses operate on FB.

A lot of communities share information about personal requirements, health, public safety.

There may be better ways to protect the Thai populace from objectionable news from Germany, DMK and elsewhere?

Good point.  Blocking FB in Thailand would impact a lot of businesses and other organisations that don't bother to put up their own websites and use FB instead.  Many do have a website but leave it static and use FB as their active website.  Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Translation:  Somebody somewhere is certainly thinking about it, but hasn't figured out yet how to do it.  It would be totally out of character to be thinking ahead to all the negative consequences.  I suspect the page-by-page blocking going on now represents a drop in the bucket, and there's a whole lot of craving to just have a big red OFF button for all those times when internat'l derision reaches flood stage.

What happened to the good old days when you could stage a coup and the rest of the world had no idea what was going on two weeks after the event. The military (government) should shut down all access to social media and be done with it.  They know what you need to know.

All the Somchais need to get their stories together. One says no problem, another says it's imminent.

I just read (in a EUropean newspaper) that Thailand wants to suspend Facebook and they put a link to a short video with it.

So in Europe they now think Thailand will ban facebook.

Block Facebook and Line and maybe people will start talking to each other again.

Block Facebook and Line and people will move to Google Plus or any of the tens of social networks available. Prohibition has never been an effective solution, education can achieve better results.

Also, what if you use FB for business? You'll be seriously damaged by this government's move!

More court writs to be sent to Facebook to take down illegal URLs

IMG_1432.jpg

Facebook Thailand has been cooperative with the government but is yet to receive additional writs from the court in order to take down 97 URLs which still have content deemed a threat to national security.

National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission secretary-general Takorn Tanthasit said Tuesday his office had coordinated with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to have the court writs sent to Facebook Thailand so as to take down the 97 URLs.

Mr Takorn on Tuesday visited the Thai Internet Service Provider Association to inspect the work of the officials there to find out whether all the illegal URLs have been removed from Facebook.

We have no authority to suspend Facebook, PM admits

By Wasamon Audjarint

The Nation

PRIME Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha admitted on Tuesday that his government had no authority to suspend the operation of Facebook in Thailand following its refusal to block access to 131 URLs with content deemed illegal.

Prayut said the only thing the government could do was to seek court orders addressing specific URLs and have social media providers cooperate by blocking those web addresses.

“All we can do is ask for cooperation from foreign countries, the private sector and Internet service providers,” the premier said.

“It’s because we have no better options.”

The 131 web addresses in question were found to have content deemed insulting to the monarchy or threatening national security.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission last week gave Facebook Thailand a deadline – until 10am Tuesday to take down the 131 URLs.

Failure to do so may result in legal action, the watchdog said.

Thailand is the most active country on Facebook in Asia.

Don't get me wrong but if they block Facebook then the present government is toasted - guaranteed. Wherever I go I see literally almost EVERYBODY on Facebook, be it in stores, waiting at traffic lights, in restaurants, in elevators - literally everywhere.

Take this away and the will be a cultural revolution of unseen proportions. Since they never published WHICH sites Zuckerberg and his cronies should block I strongly suggest the government to just confirm that all is OK now and go on with life; FB will certainly not enter such domestic issues considering their 1.9 billion (1'900'000'000) users.

Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha addressing the National Reform Council and National Legislative Assembly on 4 June 2015.

BANGKOK — The chief author of new, comprehensive cybersecurity legislation said Tuesday that giving the government access to private sector computer systems is necessary to protect the nation from cyber attacks.

Major changes were made to the draft of the bill approved Monday by the the junta-appointed reform steering assembly from the version that was previously endorsed by the cabinet. It includes effectively granting the prime minister absolute online power by putting him at the head of a new cybersecurity agency with full authority to access private computer systems without any judicial oversight in cases deemed emergencies.

And absolute power corrupts, but in this case it's already way too late.

Ok fine but how will we know what is to be found if it's not to be seen.

Stupid childlike little men playing games with their own people and making themselves and the country look truly what it is a kinder-garden.

Facebook better stand their ground or the rest of the world will be angry with them for bowing to liars cheats and thieves.

Simple answer is if you do not like, do not look, but the more you push it, the more people will look as there is no better promotion that word of mouth.

Cut the internet connection to the country and we will soon see a change.

The funny side of this is even if FB cut those local URL's the rest of the world could still see them and with millions of locals in other countries they can still see what is said and VPN also lets locals see.

How any expat can stay here I will never understand, they too must have forgotten what morals are.

Seems you can squeeze the odd submarine or tank through the process against the people's wishes but fiddle with Facebook Nero and you will be seriously burned. Seems like you know who put all his huff and bluff back in his bag and backed off.

The fact that they threatened to block FB show their lack of intellectual ability, their arrogance as well as their ignorance. The video which this whole thing is about is available on many other sites and the more noise they make the more sites are loading the video. Example - This is the video the Thai government wants to block or a Tattoo website - about bad ink etc. Due to their limited intellect they dont understand that the more noise they make the more international attention they are drawing on themselves. Their arrogance is reflected in their belief they can threaten a company like FB. Their ignorrance is shown in their lack of understanding how humans work. The more you try to ban a video the more people would like to see it.
