Do you see foreigners doing the same job at your country? If yes, which country is that?

Or you are mistaken with traffic controllers in front of buildings and busy intersection who wears police shirt?

Dear newbie, how would you like it if someone came to your home country as a tourist and had the power to tell you what to do and how to act?

Of course it's only for Thais - and even if you get naturalized and get citizenship, Thais won't react too kindly to a white guy policing them.

My tan is now much darker than my Thai wife's skin. Do you think I might pass as a big and tall Thai traffic cop?

There have been alleged reports of foreigners being accompanied by Thai traffic police in Pattaya & Phuket and it being called a scam.

Personally never seen it.

Any EU or commonwealth citizen can apply to become a police officer in the UK. Rules are similar across the EU.

Most of the EU, if you like.

Makes no difference to the question.

Yes, foreigners can volunteer to help the police. They get to wear uniforms and are there to deal with language and communication issues. I don't know how much power they actually have, eg. power of arrest.

Forget about being a cop, can a foreigner join the Thai military? The junta is in control now, why not go to the big boy league?

No but you are rude.

I got stopped in Phuket and there was an English police volunteer checking licenses and levying fines if you had a pillion passenger withou the right type of uk license.

What a total <deleted> the guy was.

Wasnt alone but was definitely an integral part of the team.

and for interest only what is the correct type of UK licence  ??

Yes, sometimes the regular foreign volunteers for the police assist with the traffic checkpoints, esp in the tourist areas where it's likely many of the people involved will not speak the Thai language.  So, what's the big deal?  They're always working along side the Thai police.  It's not like they're out there as the Lone Ranger.

If you'd been wearing a helmet, had a proper license and registration papers then maybe you'd be pleased you could have talked with someone in your native language and been waved right through the traffic stop.

i have this feeling most posters are  holding back on this one for fear of  showing their true opinions of the pretend wannabe cops

I asked him the same question. Actually I first asked him Brit to Brit to let it ride.

He said that in the UK I'd need a full motorbike license to carry a pillion passenger. He is absolutely correct but we are in Thailand...

He came on with 'pay a 400 baht fine here or it'll be 12,000' at the station. At that point the wife intervened and told the cop what he'd threatened. Thai cop said it was nonsense and to just ignore him.

200 baht and we were off.

Apparently the western 'cop' is a retired British cop. Not the best type of British Bobby either.

Good one.  Similar to what I say to farangs when they do idiotic stuff like wear certain colored shirts on certain days or "wai" the spirit shrine inside Nana Plaza: "Did you wake up today and decide to get a lobotomy?"  Thais have an excuse for such behaviors, they grew up being brainwashed into them.  Farangs have no such excuse.

actually I think the Brit copsucker you met was quite right

he says and you say that a fulll motorbike license is needed to carry a pillion pax

I understand this as you do not have a full UK motorbike license

if that is correct you can not have a pillion in Thailand

you quite simply do not have the license to carry a pillion pax

that being in Thailand or Zimbabwe or wherever

based on your UK license, get a Thai motorbike license and ride with pillion pax

No, he was definity an a$$hole - his eye rolling Thai colleagues said as much.

Not a single receipt was given that day.

There is or was an Australian Police officer in Chiang Mai who liaises with the Thai Police .Saw a covert video  of him with Thai police stopping motorcycle riders at Thape Gate near McDonalds .He was asking a young Farang without a helmet to show his Passport .F.F.S.even the Thai regular Police don't do that .The young guy was polite (sounded Italian ) ,and was reasonably well dressed .The video ended then so i don't know the outcome .

This Australian Police officer involved drives around C.M in a flash 4 by 4 with Police Notifications on the side and colorful lights on the roof .He is sometimes at a Farang Restaurant i used to frequent .

If you'd had the proper Thai license there would have been no 200 baht "fine".  Or you could have asked to go to the police station to pay your fine and you'd be given a receipt.  And the fine wouldn't have been 12,000 baht at the station, either.

How would you react if foreigners were driving around in your country without the proper license?
