Department of Intellectual Property and Thai Police to crack down on pirated movies

The Department of Intellectual Property is preparing to discuss with the Royal Thai Police on measures necessary to solve the problem of pirated movies, which have been reportedly surging in sales during the New Year Holidays.

The director-general of the Department of Intellectual Property, Mrs. Puangrat Asawapisin (พวงรัตน์ อัศวพิศิษฐ), revealed that her agency would be meeting with the deputy commissioner-general of the Royal Thai Police on December 27 to discuss measures to prosecute the sale of pirated goods such as video tapes, and CDs during the New Year Holidays. Mrs. Puangrat said that officials were concerned over the large sales volume during this period.

The director general has requested the cooperation of the Royal Thai Police to establish a special task force to meet the needs of intellectual property victims, composed of over 50 private entities.

Operators, distributors, and sellers of pirated material would be monitored and prosecuted nationwide.

Mrs. Puangrat reported that from January- October 2006, 8,305 cases of intellectual property rights infringement took place.

Although this would be the umpteenth crackdown on such material, the powers-that-be are really serious about it this time. Really. :o

well the crackdown on video-tapes was very efficient. I can't find any video tapes anymore......

What happened to that Thaksin inspired plan a few years ago for the seizing officers to get 1 baht for every illegal disc seized?

More profitable to resell the seized items. :o

Some of the sellers are really on the ball. I bought some DVD movies from a shop last month and had to wait 10 minutes for the guy to go somewhere to fetch the disc. If they raided the shop they would have seized a truck load of empty covers.

Pantip would be a good start.... :o:D

The big open secret is that the thais are very lacklustre in piracy control.

As long as they are not thai movies then the thai police are in no hurry to regulate copyright theft.

I'm sure they never can stop it entirely.

like in Malaysia: after some show off of enforcing such law, even more pirated CDs are being sold, and for cheaper prices!
