Pattaya tunnel: Thais fed up of waiting as opening still unannounced

PATTAYA: -- Thais have gone online to express their frustration at the continuing delays to the opening of the Pattaya road tunnel.

Sophon Cable TV quoted the deputy mayor Banthit Khinjak "revealing" that the highways department were "pressing" the contractors to get the job done.

It was the latest pronouncement in the tunnel saga - a project that was meant to be finished in February.

But the so called "news" just didn't wash with Facebook commentators who are fed up with waiting.

Chanon said: "Why can't they say when it's opening?"

Pornsak screamed: "Get it opened! The traffic is terrible".

Neung poured scorn on the project: "Where is the professionalism?"

Natcha was more worried about the appalling surface of the road topside, never mind in the 1.9 kilometer stretch of tunnel. She bemoaned tires getting ruined on that stretch of road.

Pinyo poked fun commenting: "Will you need a boat to get through?"

Others continued the ridicule with comments about it being a good place to drain flood water into.

Mongkolchart just made do with a laughing icon.

Thais aren't the only ones tired of waiting.   Last I heard we were told it was supposed to be open by the end of May.  So that gives them just under 36 hours to get it open.

I won't be holding my breath.

Waiting for the rainy season to finish so they can say "told you it was safe from flooding" :clap2:

You guys living here forget very quickly about construction delays in other countries.

Road tunnel in Perth was over 2 years late opening, Big stadium in London 3 years late & 93 mil quid over budget.

At least Thailand is building infrastructure, better than 7 other ASEAN countries who are light years behind

I really don't know what the rush is, drive through the 'underpass' and join a queue for the next set of roadworks :clap2:

The benefit will be for those wanting to turn into Central.

Authorities are rumored to be having a discussion about forming a committee to review fortune tellers in order to request bids to provide information about "Lucky days" to be discussed by the soon to be selected "Opening Day Ceremony Committee"

Care to share any evidence that they are planning one for Nua?

Original plans stated only Dai and Thrappasit.

hahaha ; yes , kidding......; it is a pity; late and horrid quality; sound familiar ?

sounds like the typical thai process in like matters; a contractor 'won' the bid  (dubious) and then , after paying all the kickbacks, realized he need to take 'extra shortcuts'; the losers ? all of us

1.9 kilometer stretch of tunnel

The Chunnel was built about 6.4km per year and under an average depth is 45m below the seabed.

Compare that to the Pattayanel.

But I think the real danger here is the thing will never be completed or opened or operating and maintained correctly.  I can't see how it won't be a big aquarium

Suggest center dividing wall  needs to be 1m higher how long before some speeding idiot bounces off the side wall loses control and finishes up in oncoming traffic also idiots who drive with high beam or spotlights on will blind oncoming traffic.

The Second Avenue subway in NY took 100 years and they've only completed three stops.

The Big Dig in Boston took 30 years, with a $24 Billion Dollar over run - so this little thing in Pattaya is right on time in my opinion.  :post-4641-1156694572:

problem is probably the finishing touch.

since the budget is probably run out the contractors have to finance the finishing touches themselves.

BTW......traffic has improved greatly since the last lane has been re-surfaced.

That's the problem them. The traffic is moving so much better now that the top-side roads have been completed, someone has decided that the tunnel isn't really needed anymore. So there's no need to pay the contractor and they can use the money instead for the marina rebuild.

...and then no boats or yachts will come so they will decide that they never really needed one, not pay for it either, etc., etc..

You said it. It's a battle of wills on who is going to finish and pay for the Pedestrian Walkway and  the final paving, etc.

What lanes have been paved? I haven't seen any pics showing the tunnel lanes as finished paved.

I will be back to Jomtien in a week or so. Just wondering.

Has Neung been out of the country for a long period of time?
