BANGKOK, 30th May 2017 –Establishing the Five pillars of Thai Tourism 4.0 is in progress.

Mr. Pongpanu Svetarundra, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has given a special interview to update the public on the Ministry’s work in progress on the Tourism 4.0 policy.

In line with the government’s policy to help the country develop and maintain a Valued-Based Economy, Tourism 4.0 is a vital part of the plan. The tourism industry currently contributes 20% to the country’s GDP. From January to April this year alone, it brought in up to 621,646 billion Baht.

In order to maintain a high level of tourism activity and to respond to a new style of travel, called FIT (Free Independent Tourists), the Ministry aims to create a customer-centered approach.

Five pillars constitute the foundation of the Tourism 4.0 policy. These are: the development of the Tourism Intelligence Center (TIC) system, promotion of digital tourism, improvement of the E-document system, change of organizational culture, and the enhancement of research and development.

The Ministry believes this development plan will be accomplished within the next five years. And if it succeeds, Thailand should maintain its high ranking among prominent tourist destinations in the world.

FIT (Free Independent Tourists),

And who are these FITS? (Free Independent Tourists as opposed to zero dollar Chinese tourists).

The crapola just keeps on coming. MISFITS is a more likely description..

Maybe could turn the "5 pillars" into something like Stonehenge, same era and all that.

Some folk would like to see Madame Tourism turned into a pillar of salt...for overseeing a modern version of Sodom, a la Lot's wife.

They have their heads shoved so far up their asses. Even if they somehow miraculously get their way and meet their goals they will have destroyed the entire country doing so. Now they have destroyed the most obvious destinations they are leaving no stone left unturned destroying the obscure ones.

Just two weeks ago it brought over 800 billion

Seriously, how much brain power it takes to get the lies statistics straight? I manage it by evening news skimming

If tourism is 20% of the economy it means they brought in the ball park of $80 billion USD last year. Either tourism is growing at an unrealistic rate or the over all economy is shrinking. Just based upon those figures.

Bizarrely the one segment of the industry they seem determined to curtail is the intercultural extended stay tourist ( often with a keen interest in horizontal folk dancing)....they seem to be getting the rough end of the pineapple in various ways, despite the fact that the expenditure is much greater than ( and is spread far more widely) than the average short-stay airfare/hotel package people.

They are aware those people exist they are just starting to put the squeeze on them intellectually, financially, horizontally and vertically. Give it time.

A TIC for the FIT, inviting khun 01101000111 to enjoy Thailand, and the use of big words that no one understands but give the impression of importance.

So no emphasis on tourist safety and security?

last century 'Free (or Fully) Independent Tourists' used to be called backpackers; so nothing new at all.

Yet, everything being done by the immigration department is restricting travel. The latest is tourist visa applications require an onward FLIGHT within 30 days to be approved, never mind that many want to travel overland to other countries, or that the TV can be extended by 30 days. As for basing oneself in LOS and going in and out on visa exempt entries, forgedaboudit.

It seems Mickey Mouse is running the department now.

a fair point. they should be looking after the tourists they have before worrying about new ones. not so politically correct to be wooing us old fat sex tourists however.
