PM affirms commitment to UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

 

 

BANGKOK, 1 June 2017 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed confidence that the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights will benefit businesses in the long run and aligns with the government's sustainable development goals. 

Gen Prayut delivered a keynote address on the matter at a seminar to disseminate and drive the guiding principles of business and human rights. He said businesses are responsible for upholding human rights and guaranteeing dignity, safety, equality, equal opportunity, access to government services, and fair treatment. 

The United Nations has laid out three main principles: ensuring that people receive proper compensation from business operations, ensuring that employees' rights are respected, and ensuring reparations in cases of human rights violations. He affirmed the government's commitment to business growth and respect for human rights.

Gen Prayut expressed confidence that the seminar will raise awareness on human rights in Thai society and that the principles will be beneficial to the businesses in the long run. Government agencies and human rights committees stand ready to assist the implementation of the UN principles.

The Prime Minister also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of cooperation to mobilize the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The memorandum was signed by the National Human Rights Committee, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Bankers Association Association, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and the Global Computing Network of Thailand.
