Commuter van operators want to return to Victory Monument

BANGKOK: -- Operators of commuter vans have petitioned the government seeking for permission to return to the Victory Monument after suffering enormous loss from operation.

The petition was sent by their representative, the Inter Provincial Commuter Van Business Operation Association’s secretary Ms Siripis Jetanadee to the government’s working committee on commuter van reorganization.

In the petition, the operators said passengers using commuter van service had dropped 90% after they were rearranged and evicted from the Victory Monument to three bus terminals since 25 October last year, pending construction of a new van terminal near Morchit bus terminal over the next 10 months.

Moreover they also asked for reprieve if van driver is caught for driving over the 90-km speed limit. In this offence, they ask that they be fined but not to confiscate their driving licences.

They also wanted to take passengers along the way to the destination.

But committee chairman Col Suvit Ketsri rejected their requests saying only the van terminal and taking passengers on the way would be acceptable.

The smart move here is to build an intergrated BMTA bus and van terminal adjacent to Makkasan ARL station with new access roads to the expressway. A proper transport hub given links to the MRT, ARL and only 1 station from the BTS. (Future Light Blue line too)

There is plenty of land there and the van terminal wouldn't need to encroach on the huge Makkasan Railyard redevelopment with its previously planned 4 100+ floor buildings!

Yeah right. Back to double parking and blocking the small side sois. You get what you deserve.

I did enjoy using the Mini Vans at Victory, but even the ones with the real offices there, provided lousy

service. I paid for a ticket to Jomtien Beach south of Pattaya, but th lazy driver dropped me in Pattaya and

told me to take the 10 baht taxi to Jomtien, even though they had the Jomtien Beach as a destination at

the Victory office.  So  I do not have much sympathy for most of the companies that run the mini vans.

Geezer

The "relief" from the 90 km/h limit the van pilots want, borders on the insanely criminal.

The 90 km/h limit should be enforced to the max, all those vans should have a speed restrictor.

Besides, if any van drives too fast, impound the van for three months, lock up the driver for at least three months, take away his driving license, and fine the owner of the van for 100,000 baht.

Remember that time when victory monument was free of traffic jams and when we would drive freely around without hassle?

Me neither.

Them asking for a fine instead of confiscation when speeding seems like they are all set to begin racing bumper to bumper again. Why repeat the same mistakes over and over again, the minivan drivers have very clearly demonstrated that they are incapable of other than selfish behavior. If anything then an increase in punishment should be introduced when it comes to passenger transportation.

With no points system for driving licences, these operators could be told they're not going to be allowed to operate the vans without some automatic driving aids - and leave it up to them to decide if they will continue.

We love a 'fine' system because it means we can do whatever we like for as long as we don't mind the chance of getting caught occasionally and paying some tea money.

1. Web cameras - maybe 4 running cameras (one for each corner) or a minimum of two (front/rear).

2. Special Licence - apart from the normal 'driving licence' they could issue a separate 'passenger van' licence.

3. Panic button - any passenger can require the driver allow the police to access footage to assess whether he was driving badly/dangerously.

4. Special vehicles with special containers provided to transport pigs to the moon.
