PHUKET: -- Phuket Governor Norrapat Plodthong and a team of relevant government officials on Saturday visited the site of of the planned multi-billion-baht 22.4 kilometre Sakoo-Koh Kaew expressway and stated that the road will be needed to help with the island’s growing traffic problems.

In September last year, then Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada confirmed that the Highways Department had decided on the route the planned 12-lane expressway from Koh Kaew to Phuket International Airport costing B5.5 billion would take.

Ex-Gov Chamroen announced the route at a public meeting held at Phuket Rajabhat University on Sept 6, 2016.

Best idea in ages.  They should divide it up into 3 or 4 sections.  Each contractor gets 5 - 7 km.  Will be finished much faster.  Also, less risk of bankruptcy, etc...  Adjust payments so that 1st finished gets a big bonus, slower get less or penalties for tardiness.  Scope would need to be similar for each contract.

Mind boggling. Drivers here can't handle 6 lane highways .... just image the minimart bike trolley wandering across to make a U-turn.

That's how the Petronas Towers were built. Two towers, two different contractors.

Minus kickbacks that should be about 3 lanes each way

The link  says that it will be 80 metres wide.

That is crazy if true as the average width of a lane is around 3 metres.you do the math.

Even if the "pie in the sky" tramway was incorporated its still a crazy number.

They would all be Phuket construction companies.....it will still take an eternity!

So 4 lanes for private commerce, 1 lane for motorbikes, 1 lane for vehicles that pull over to buy some som tam from the private commerce people, and 1.5 lanes for actual flow of traffic ( .5 lane blocked due to poor parking).

This is what an about 80 metre wide highway looks like.

Picture this anywhere on Phuket.

Its laughable at best.                            Image result for picture of 26 lane highway 10

The link also mentions a bike lane and decorations, which explains the difference.

Yep, but not just decorations, but  "decorations unique to ‘Phuketness’."

Can't wait to see these unique decorations.

If true to form and as expected from this more and more less desirable place to live, maybe will look like this for eg.

Luckily this and the tramway are mostly only some idiots wet dreams.

Immagine the traffic chaos for many years to come if they did actually build both simultaneously .

The solution is very simple, built a decent railway service round the whole island will suffice. The need for more roads has no value.

:sorry:  this will never happen ...

Here is the proposed route:

So, is the land for this "proposed " route already purchased and set aside.?

As with the "proposed" tram line i have seen no evidence that it is.

  • 1 year later...

One year on, has anyone heard anything about the slightly larger than normal expressway, seems to have gone a bit quiet !

I never imagined it would happen but just interested as it was supposed to be going in a few hundred yards from my front door ...

Still does nothing to improve West Coast communications. The sooner roads are driven over the hills from Kathu to Kamala and Chalong-Patong the better. The basic routes are already there.

A 12 lane expressway(?)-the island would sink under the weight of concrete and backhanders in this attempt to turn the place into bangkok.

I agree, they are destroying the very thing that attracts us to Phuket, if i want to live in a city there are plenty to choose from.
