Public Health minister seek tax hikes on whiskey and beer

BANGKOK: -- In a bid to control alcohol consumption, Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla will propose nine national measures - including a tax hike on rice whiskey and beer - for Cabinet approval next week.

Following the third meeting of the Alcohol Consumption Control Committee Thursday, Mongkol said the ministry would also launch internal regulations to have its offices alcohol free nationwide and set up regional centres to gather complaints and train some officials to act as a "mini FBI" to ensure regulation enforcement.

The nine national measures included a push to hike the tax on rice whiskey and beer, a prohibition on duty-free alcohol drinks and a separation of alcohol drink products from the Free Trade Agreement list, according to Mongkol.

As always, it's work in progress in Thailand...

Remember the whole circus about the ad ban for alcohol ? Not finished by the way...

Anyway, taxes increase was an alternative proposal, in order to curb consumption. Most of us were thinking that it would be much more efficient, compare to the ban.

So it appears that... they want to do both !

Oh my Singha... it's getting rather complex...

The Council of State on Monday stood by its original ruling in late November that the Food and Drug Administration, an agency under the Public Health Ministry, has no mandate to control alcohol advertisements.

http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/29Dec2006_news10.php

The ministry starts to feel that its hysterical anti booze campaign... well... has not a great support. So, it tries to find alternative ways :

-increase taxes

-and ask the Public Relations Department to extend to 24/24 hours its own ban on advertising...

It's a game.

A ping-pong game.

Each player use a so called "state agency", and other legal tricks, for the match point. It's ridiculous. Do we have a government ?

Meanwhile, we are laughing. And having a drink. Cheers.

According to the Bangkok Post about a week or two ago, the Johnny Walker sponsored event is still on. No details were given regarding advertising.

Remember , your not living in a democracy anymore .This lot have more power than Toxin ever had.

ha, very valid point!

in fact, even in his time "this lot" had a lot of power, perhaps much more than him and therefore THE MAIN (if not the only) power....

about democracy - old beaten up topic ! what IS democracy, where it reasly exists, etc. not to mention - when if at all in Thailand there ever been a democracy - according to all its Constitutions it still remains a Constitutional Monarchy.

about alchohol consumtpion - most likely "this lot" has had some disgargeements with alchohol manufacturing moghuls and decided to show them "who's the boss". it is too big business to end so easily - a lot of "tea money" enough to feed not only "this lot" but a lot of other "lots" :o

I think it is more like - to create some sort of deficit or at least artificially higher demand for its consumption, so that this business thrives even more.
