Everybody off! Plane unloaded as passenger is carrying extra baggage - a baby!

HAT YAI: -- A Bangkok bound plane was unloaded of passengers in Hat Yai yesterday after the captain discovered a heavily pregnant woman was on board.

 

The woman, seven months pregnant, did not have a letter from a doctor to say she could fly so the Air Asia captain ordered everyone on flight FD 3109 to Don Muang back into the terminal.

 

Following a delay the passengers were reloaded minus the pregnant woman and her friend who were allowed to take a later flight.

 

International regulations state that pregnant women carrying babies of 28 to 34 weeks duration must have a certificate from a doctor to fly and need to sign papers on board an aircraft too.

 

This had not happened in this instance and so due to safety concerns not only for the mother and child but for the rest of the passengers they were off-loaded.

 

Thai Rath did not explain why the passenger concerned was allowed to board a later flight.

The passenger was probably allowed to board the later flight as she was able to provide a medical report confirming what trimester she was in and able to sign off on AirAsia's indemnification paperwork in triplicate.

 

Mistake by the check-in staff at Hat Yai letting her board unless the passenger wasn't showing too much of a baby bump. Definitely remiss of the pax not to check on the requirements for flying while pregnant. Probably spotted by one of the onboard hotties though.

It's passenger fault also for not informing check in staff if she had the letter on hand. I guess she had no idea at all.

Normally, at bigger airports like HDY, there's a doctor on call whenever the airport is open so the doc can fill out the paperwork there and then.

It's AirAsia, so there is probably another add-on charge for being pregnant.

I've not seen any "Internatuonal Regulations" but do see some airlines have a policy and some dont.

Whatever but this won't prevent me from takin Air Asia during stops in LOS!!...I mean who would want to miss those lovely chesty female flight attendants who are real friendly to chat up and if you get lucky, on arrival  she might even show you her private parts!!.....that is her private and secrets parts of the city naturally, what else?

If you offload a passenger, the cabin must be searched for explosive devices before take-off, and it would be easier to do this with everybody (and their carry-on luggage) out of the way.  Any checked luggage must also be off-loaded.

Because they arranged for a doctor to come and produce a fake certificate for a high fee before the next flight. That's why!

That's being added to their website.   You just check the box if your pregnant and the add-on charge will appear.

If they offload a passenger suspected of being a terrorist, then they do the cabin search plus a complete baggage offload, re-scan and reload. For a pregnant lady?

 

Chances are the checked baggage manifest on this flight was small.... being AirAsia and all.

Mrs NL recently flew 4 times with AirAsia while in her second and third trimesters. Downloaded the form the first time and brought her doctors appointment card; no worries. The other 3 times, they produced the form at the check-in (but totally buggered the check-in for a few minutes while they did it all in triplicate).

 

No extra charges.

Its one of those answers you read that beggar belief, however, once thought about, I can see that a blanket policy which results in anyone needing to be offloaded for whatever reason presents a potential risk.... 

 

As daft as it seems, as well profiled as this lady could be, someones job needs protecting for society will no longer permit intelligent risk in the face of all that has gone wrong recently.

 

Well, either that, or there is much more to the story !

Depends on how bureaucratic the captain/crew/security want to be- and some officials can be very bureaucratic indeed.

I was caught up in something like this a few years ago on a flight from  Heathrow to Schipol.

 

The gate had closed and one passenger had not boarded, so we were delayed while checkeed baggage was offloaded, the offender's bags removed and the rest re-loaded.

 

At that point, a passenger stood up and announced that he was now too late for his meeting and he was getting off.

 

Then we had even more delay while the cabin was searched.  They didn't offload us on that occasion, but the search might have been faster if we had been offloaded.

 

We had by then missed our ATC slot, so the total delay was about three hours.

 

Paranoia Rules OK.
