EC vows to fight new draft bill on its reconstitution

By The Nation

The Election Commission (EC) will lodge a protest against the reconstitution of the agency following the endorsement of the new EC draft bill by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) last week.

Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said the EC considered its reconstitution as unconstitutional. It would table the issue along with some other issues at the EC meeting before forwarding it to the joint committee that would scrutinise the bill following its passage.

This would happen before June 22, Somchai added.

Somchai, however, added that the EC did not expect the decision to be reversed as the EC president would be only one of nine members in the tri-party committee also comprising the NLA, and the Constitution Drafting Commission which crafted the bill.

He said the EC, however, could still fight the case via the Constitutional Court, which would be the next step in the legal process.

It depends from which point if view. They perfectly served the yellow/junta faction by doing all they could to prevent the 2014 election to be held. From this point of view, they should be rewarded by the Junta. That's why they are so angry.
