A Cambodian man was shot and injured by Thai soldiers while trying to cross into Thailand illegally from Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province on Friday. Khem Reoun, 40, from Kampong Tav commune, suffered a broken thigh bone.

A border soldier said his unit received information about the shooting from the family of the victim, who was being treated at Siem Reap provincial hospital. “We don’t know the motive for the shooting,” he said.

“Some local villagers said the victim crossed the border to log rosewood in Thailand’s Surin province. “We contacted Thai soldiers to verify details about the gunfire and they said they opened fire because Mr Reoun had crossed the border illegally.”
