BANGKOK: -- The Department of Land Transport is rolling out new schemes to boost safety in taxis and stop cabs speeding, refusing fares and not turning on the meter.

And the DLT has stressed that it is possible to use applications like Grab Taxi and All Thai Taxi to call cabs - but they must be registered cabs and not private vehicles that remain illegal.

The comments from Nanthapong Chertchu the DLT came after military men moved to arrest a driver at Future Park in the Rangsit area north of Bangkok who was suspected of working for Grab Taxi.

It emerged that it was a regular and legal taxi service who was registered with Grab. In this case no law was broken.

Nanthapong outlined two related applications and schemes that are ready to be introduced - TAXI OK and TAXI VIP.

Both are applications and feature special cars to monitor driver behavior and ensure the safety of the travelling public.

TAXI OK cars will be fitted with GPS tracking, CCTV and an emergency button that sends a distress signal to base. Data such as speeding drivers will be instantly available to the DLT. Cabs can be called using an application on mobile phones.

Nanthapong said that the issues of refusing fares and not turning on the meter will also be addressed with the new systems.

TAXI VIP features cars of an even great spec and has all the benefits of TAXI OK, reported Thai Rath.

Thai Rath did not say when the service was expected to hit the streets of the capital.

It's not the cars safety issue - it is the attitude of the drivers. They don't want to take you here or there, they don't want to use the meter but rather ask you for a fare corresponding to the purchase price of their old Toyota or want to charge per passenger.

Go figure why Grab Taxi, Grab Car and Uber is soooooo popular; and no, it is not the fare alone!
