I just picked up my new passport yesterday as my old one expired in September. The U.S. Consulate gave me a letter requesting Chiang Mai Immigration to transfer my Visa to the new passport.

My question is - since my Retirement Extension is due this time of year (expires 10 July), can I do both the transfer of visa and the visa extension on the same day?

Is there a cost to transfer the visa?

Thanks in advance for anyone's input.

You can do the stamp transfer and the extension application on the same day.

There is no fee for transferring the stamps. They do not transfer visas.

when i did this, also usa, the imm officer made me initial /sign 43 pages; copies of all the pages in the old passport

That is normal. But only the pages with visas and stamps for Thailand need to be copied.

Hi ubonjoe, when you say "They do not transfer visas", how do I get my Non-Immigrant O-A visa I got 10 years ago into the new passport then?

Your 10-year-old O-A visa expired about 9 years ago. It is 'kept alive' by the subsequent annual extensions of stay issued against it. The words 'visa' and 'extensions of stay' are bandied about and interchanged in conversation making answering immigration questions fraught with misunderstanding. So it's quite important to get the terminology right.

As already explained by ubonjoe, you can and will get your current extension of stay stamps transferred same day. The grandfathering O-A visa stays where it is forever, totally expired in the expired passport.

I did mine the same day in Pattaya last month and didn't have to sign anything on the copies of the old passport.

That makes no sense that the original visa will not be placed in the new passport. I understand all about the annual extensions of stay - based on that original visa and issued against it.

Immigration will do a stamp with spaces for info about your old passport and the visa you used to get the entry you have been extending.

The page with that stamp is what you will copy when you apply for your extension or anything else that requires a copy of your visa.

The fact that it doesn't make sense to you does not detract from the reality that the original O-A visa is dead, expired, gone, shuffled off this mortal coil. deceased, etc..

There's a glimmer of hope for you if you understand that extensions of stay are the things that keep you legal here. Just stop going on about getting your visa transferred and like thousands before you, there will be no problems.

As ubonjoe said already, the information about your O-A visa will be transcribed by hand which is a polite way of saying your original O-A visa is dead, expired, gone, shuffled off this mortal coil. deceased, etc.. and they will transfer the stamps.

No visas have been transferred. Ever.

So I'm off to Immigration this week to do the old passport/new passport visa extension transfer; and the yearly extension of stay.

I know which documents to bring for the extension, but other than the letter given to me by the U.S. Consulate asking Immigration to transfer the visa over to the new passport - and the 2 passports - are there any other documents or photocopies I will need specifically for the old passport/new passport transfer?

Thanks again for your help.

For the stamp transfer (visas are not transferred) you will need a copy of both passports photo pages. Copies of every page of the old passport that has a visa or stamp for Thailand on it.
