Dreadful Treatment from Amazon UK.

Recommended Posts

If this is on the wrong forum, mods can feel free to move it.  I have dealt with Amazon UK for years and never had a problem. It all started when I could not sign in, so I was told to change my password.

OK, no problem, or so I thought, So I changed it and thought, now on to business, then I was given a Verification Code sent to my email address, so when I used it, I was told it was invalid, I emailed Amazon

and told them, I was told to try again, to cut a long story short, over the past week I have been given over twenty different Verification Codes, yes you read that right, and was told every time that they were invalid.

No way would they give me an explanation for this. So I can't get books for my Kindle unless I buy them  by using the Kindle itself.

So that is me now not being able to use Amazon anymore because they wanted me to change my password, and the kept sending me invalid VCs.

Sorry about the rant, but I just had to get this off my chest.

afaik -- amazon UK do not deal outside UK.  You might have to make an account with amazon.com but before commiting to that - find out if they will send verification codes to a Thai mobile and which mobile network they will use.  I have found that my bank (for example) can send texts to DTAC, but not to AIS.  When I asked, I was told it is due to the recipricosity agreements between the UK bank, their phone network providers, and the Thai mobile networks.

Yes, they told me my email address was taken, though I did have another account with my other email address, and

got into it that way. Then I got into their  chat line and was told they could not help me because I had to use the email for my first account.

If they don't deal outside the UK, why were they answering all my emails full of apologies and saying they will help me.

Also what about all the business I have done with them over the years, I know most of the time they will not ship to Thailand, but there are sometimes when they do.

The shipping issue depends on the suppliers.  As you probably know, some suppliers ship direct to you, but stuff supplied and shipped by Amazon.co.uk seems to be for the UK only.  Because of the mixture of responses, they allow you to register a thai address for deliveries, but then disallow it on a case by case basis depending on the supplier.

You'd probably have to cancel/change your email addresses, but the easier way is to use the Mobile SMS for a verification code.  Just make sure their sms messages come through on your Thai mobile network.

No matter what your history with them, there appears to be no loyalty rewards scheme - you're just getting the usual friendly customer service -- which I have found to be very good, even though well over half of the responses are from bots with standard replies.

I tried the Mobile SMS, and it did not work, three times, a message even came up on my screen saying a VC was on it's way. Not true.

Did you try all the Thai mobile networks?  As I said before - not all have reciprocal agreements with all the mobile networks in other countries.

I wouldn't know how to do it, mine is AIS which I think is the biggest one. On my other Amazon account, I have a printout of the chat we had, and when I go to the UK, I will see a lawyer. I bought a kindle from Amazon for 8000 Bt and I can't now get in to the website to buy books although I can still buy from my kindle, but it is not the same.

Rather than going to spend lawyers fees -- better you get a person to talk to in Amazon who actually knows what they're talking about and sort this out properly.   It's like all these catch-all complicated network systems -- usually great when they're working, but really not flexible enough to allow some special set-up for a small fringe of users who have special situations.  I'd try amazon.com and see how that goes.

I have been in contact with so many people at Amazon.com over the last week, and they are either just incompetent or could not care less.

I can fix it so that I get legal aid in the UK. Just want to say I appreciate all your help.

Sorry you had a hard time - Often get random experiences with these companies.

I've had great luck with Amazon Prime.

Spent about a year considering using Amazon (from the US) to ship here to Thailand.

Had read different things about the customs and delays. Finally tried with two test cases - One about $50, and the other $100.

Both came in at about 10 days. (Not expedited shipping).

The 1st order had a minor delivery problem.

(Or address is slightly complicated - We share security with a big hotel. )

I clarified the address on email, and was contacted several times to make sure I got the package. Note I had NOT complained. But they followed up.

Point of the long post -- I've found over the years that Amazon Prime has the best customer service I've ever dealt with. The few timesI've had a problem they've been on my side. Not sure how different Amazon U.K. is -- But for me, I'm more than willing to try to get a higher end item delivered out here.

Good luck with your stuff.

Great post, thanks, but I cannot get Amazon Prime without logging in to Amazon UK, (I don't know anything about it anyway) if you can please let me know, as far as I know you need the same password for the US Amazon. I have to try and stick with amazon only because of my Kindle.

Use a new email address and open a new US Amazon account.

I already have another Amazon account with my other email address, but I need to get back in to this one because my kindle has been registered there since I bought it. I need to get back in to manage it.

If I open another account with a new email address, as soon as I want to buy anything, what will happen when I try to use my bank card to pay for it? I only have one UK account.

Ah! I know, open up another bank account, no thanks, I would still have the problem of not being able to manage my Kindle. Of course I could spend 8000Bt buying

a new Kindle. They have got me always. All this because they wanted me to change my password.

You do know there are plenty of free ebook download sites? I have had a Nook for a few years and have downloaded more than a thousand books, free.

Yes, I remember that, I debated it with you at the time, but can you download all the books by your favourite authors, or do these free sites give you a list of free downloads which do not include the authors you are following book by book?  I can also get loads of downloaded book free thanks to poster ticwaterfall.

It depends on the author. For instance you can probably download every book by Lee Child or Stephen King, but the more obscure the author the harder it will be to find his complete works. It's only a question of typing the authors name into the search function to see what's available.

Yes, I see, if I remember right, you live near Bangkok, is there any where you can buy an Nook there, like you can with a Kindle?

No, I live in Pattaya, but I've bought 3 Nooks, all from Ebay for around $100 delivered. One's print started to fade a little after about 4 years, so I bought two more, one as a spare. Both of those have been faultless. I only need to charge them around once a month and that's if I read for a couple of hours every day.

Thanks, that's a big help, I will look into that.

Thank you all for your help, I took all your advice, spent over two hours on Amazons chatline, kept getting moved from this person

to the next, although I can still use Amazon for buying things, it is impossible for me to buy anymore books from them, they say if I want any help further

I have to phone them, I had the Kindle and bought books from them for over three years with no problems till they wanted me to change my password.

They would not let me change my password without a Verification Code which every one they sent me, when I tried to use it they always told me it was invalid.

If you want to buy a Kindle with the intention of buying your books from Amazon, think very hard about it, things could be fine, but if you ever need a verification Code then you are finished, it could be what one poster said and it was because I was not in the UK.

But I repeat, be very wary of buying a Kindle with the intention of buying ebooks from  Amazon.
