Vanished from Koh Tao! Missing Russian Girl still not found – is the island hiding a macabre secret?

"it is hardly surprising ‘Turtle Island’ has a bad reputation when it takes three weeks for a search to be called when a young backpacker goes missing."

i think the above statement is a bit unfair. Many backpackers goes "missing" all the time. Its in the nature of backpacking. If the police would search every time a worried parent calls they would have exhausted their resources in 5 minutes

Perhaps you can give us the "true" facts as to why there are so many horrific murders/missing young persons on such a small Island and why the authorities there seem to ignore them

A murderer murders, and as rather scapegoats are convicted in Thailand, the culprit(s) still roam free and kill people, that is why. Oh, Sorry, one frenchman was not murdered, he was suicided, hanged with his hands tied behind his back.

The authorities are well "paid", not to spoil the reputation of the island. The less information gets out, the faster this and other cases will be forgotten.

I doubt the names of the island mafia is any secret, macabre or otherwise. But if the locals really are that p_____d off over the name given to Koh Tao, and over its dwindling reputation, they should band together and sort it out. It's down to them, no one else. And there are plenty of other options for the tourists.

I'm happy to see the spotlight being shone once more on this place. Way too many people have died or gone missing, which is simply not possible without someone knowing what has happened. The only thing more important to Thais than face is money. Maybe when tourists totally boycott the place and the island is going broke, someone might break the silence and identify the evil perpetrators. Whether the cops will do anything about it even then, is not something I would put money on though.

EVERYBODY on Koh Tao, and those of us w/friends living there, KNOWS the main perp (and his family),

the one who w/his henchmen,  killed the Brit couple 2 years ago, and several others,

(he may not be responsible for the Russian girl as she has dark hair and this guy prefers blondes)

just as everybody on our island knows which  very influential person from another province

imports 30 kg+ of "ice" and many kilos of other hard drugs every week via our island-

bottom line: ALL Thai islands are completely mafia w/collusion of BiB and  others in power

What surprises me about the whole Koh Tao 'black hole' is the number of people who are energetically trying to deny all of it - except for Hannah and David, of course.

To any rational person the very fact that there is so much doubt and so many contradictions and inconsistencies surrounding the other deaths ought to give pause - anyone who is dispassionate would conclude that there is more going on here than meets the eye.

And yet in all of these forums, whenever this topic has come up, there is a harcdore of 6 or 7 people who are disputing every point of doubt raised about the manner of these deaths, and sometimes getting quite aggressive about it.

To an objective observer, this seems only to strengthen the case for further investigation - why protest so strongly when there is so much doubt? And reading between the lines the gist of what these protesters are saying is . . .  "nothing can be proved, you've got no proof, " over and over again.

I'm posting these comments towards the start of this thread - let's just wait and see if the shouts of protest of the 'Koh Tao is innocent' brigade come wriggling out of the woodwork yet again over the next few days.

oh, Koh Tao is NOT innocent, especially a certain bar owner and his influential family

Friends from US asked where in Thailand they should visit. I gave them recommendations of cities and sights, and a strong, graphic warning about Koh Tao. They adjusted their plans accordingly.

In a society where daughters are sold into sexual slavery and sons are taught to look the other way from murder, it's the only immediate power we have to do anything.

I feel a song coming in....(apologies to Jim Reeves)

It is no secret what Tao can do

What its done for  others

It will do for you

With arms wide open

They'll welcome you

It is no secret what Tao can do!!!

Hotel California lyrics seems appropriate, too.

Serial murder? I hope not, but missing for that long.

"A post on the Koh Tao community page on Facebook even states that news of the missing girl should be supressed to protect the already dwindling reputation of the island. And now rumours are circulating that the body of a young girl was found six weeks ago partially burnt, eaten by animals and partially wrapped in T-shirts."

A sad reflection of a community out of touch with reality.

And tomorrow we read a statement from the TAT this is outdated rumors or at least fake news.

I wonder if because she was Russian that she didn't get the word. If you speak/read English well at least you have a fairly good chance of reading or hearing about the problem on Ko Tao and avoiding the place.

You'd hope that Lonely Planet would start warning people off, especially since it seems to be the backpackers who keep getting snuffed. Seems Lonely Planet could really be a big help if they just stopped listing Ko Tao and put a page up in lieu saying that for now the authorities are allowing tourists to be murdered with impunity and without any serious investigation and that it is best to stay away and boycott the situation. At the very least they need to have a warning posted in their next edition with the known facts of all the cases of murders and and scandals surrounding investigations etc. and then tourists can make an informed decision whether or not to visit.

I believe there is an element on that Island that is praying on young western women, on islands you have Thais mixing with farangs, they socialise in the same bars, that doesn't really happen in other holiday cities like pattaya for example were Thais have their own areas for social encounters away from the farang areas, on koh tao I believe that there are groups of Thai men who actively seek out targets in the local bars and night entertainment venues and when they are told to sod off lose face and become angry, some of these men have established themselves in positions of influence and feel the need to take things further when their advances are refused, this then leads to revenge attacks and possible rape attempts as they try to recover face, it is evil and cowardly as they prey on young innocent girls who don't realise the danger they are in, I believe these people will stop at nothing to get their way and feel that they are above the law.

This particular incident of the missing Russian girl is interesting because the one sure way to cover up an evil act is to make sure there is absolutely no evidence left behind to investigate, this particular incident will go no further than a missing person unless a body is found, IMO she is buried in a hole in the ground and will never be found.

Exactly my thoughts~They will all be found one day

Many, usually reported as suicides or accidents

According to most reports regarding deaths of Farlangs in Thailand, they only die in three ways; suicide (the all time favourite) accidents or illnesses. It seems that it`s only Thais who get murdered. It`s also widely known that western women never get raped in Thailand; if they cry rape that`s because they are trying to discredit the country and only covering up their own promiscuous lifestyles.  If Farlangs get robbed or beaten to a pulp in the streets or in bars, everyone knows that it must have been them who instigated it and deserved all they had coming to them.

So there you have it, cases closed, no point in searching for Thai perpetrators of murder and rape, because they simply don`t exist.
