Jonathan Fairfield Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 PHOTOS: Tourists warned after thousands of jellyfish wash up on Jomtien beach Local officials are urging tourists to be careful after thousands of jellyfish washed up on Jomtien beach on Saturday. The jellyfish, which measure between 1-2cm, were washed up along a 2 kilometer stretch of beach. Preliminary investigations by officials revealed the jellyfish could cause irritation if they come into contact with the skin. Further tests are due to be carried out marine officials today (Sunday). Photos of the jellyfish were shared to the welovepattaya Facebook page. -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2017-06-25
geriatrickid Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 If they must wash ashore, better Jomtien - Pattaya where tourists don't usually go in the water, than the other side at Hua Hin .
FredNL Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Was it ruled as suicide? Or have they died due to pollution?
Emster23 Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Noticed yesterday warning sign near night market was knocked down. Had directions to apply vinegar. Thought it might be good idea to put some of those little plastic packs given with take away food that has vinegar and some sliced chilis. Someone would probably steal them all though....
ttrd Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Why do jellyfish wash ashore? Quick Answer A combination of strong currents, severe winds and the weak propulsion system of the jellyfish makes these creatures susceptible to washing ashore. According to ReefEd, a service of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, jellyfish have only a weak internal pumping mechanism that allows them to float, but they cannot steer away from danger. When jellyfish are caught in a strong current, they have no means of escape. Continue Reading Full Answer Strong weather systems like hurricanes and regular events like the full moon both affect jellyfish. The pull of the full moon exacerbates strong currents, making jellyfish more likely to wash ashore. A small number of jellyfish are pushed ashore by the regular changing of the tides, but deposits of hundreds of jellyfish are the result of unusual tidal activity. However, washing ashore is part of the natural life cycle of jellyfish, says Matt Babineau of the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Jellyfish are 98 percent water. When they wash up on shore, jellyfish quickly dry out and die. However, Babineau advises against picking up jellyfish or throwing them back into the ocean. Some jellyfish are harmless, but others have powerful, painful deadly stings. Additionally, the jellyfish cannot fight against the tidal conditions that washed them ashore, so any jellyfish thrown back into the ocean are likely to wash ashore again. https://www.reference.com/pets-animals/jellyfish-wash-ashore-b9805f14a94c10f4 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why Are Billions of Jellyfish Congregating on Beaches in the West Coast? https://futurism.com/why-are-billions-of-jellyfish-congregating-on-beaches-in-the-west-coast/
Get Real Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 As I said already! All bad things are coming to Pattaya.
Bullie Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Strong southerly winds, and a high tide are enough for this phenomenon to occur. Since they are not box jellyfish, the risk is not that great. Just keep an eye open for jellyfish, and a handy supply of vinegar handy. Urine will do in a pinch. All in all it should not spoil your fun, and there is no reason for the customary accusatory finger as shown by the ladies in the above shown pictures: jellyfish are NOT criminals!
Stargeezr Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Yuck! I sure wish there was a good use for jelly fish, are they good fertilizer like kelp is?
nasanews Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 To me jellyfish appearance on ashore are good signs of pollution.
pattjock Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Just scoop them up and cook them for the Chinese, they seem to eat anything.
champers Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 If they end up on Pattaya beach there will be chaos. Thousands get off boats and have to walk through the sea to reach the beach and the road.
