Seven missing village dogs amazed motorists — and the internet — after being filmed trekking together along a busy highway in northeastern China. The unlikely pack appeared to be on a determined mission: a 17-km journey back home after escaping suspected dog meat traders. The dramatic sight unfolded in Changchun, in Jilin province, where the dogs were spotted carefully navigating traffic on March 16. The extraordinary scene, captured on video, quickly went viral across social media and sparked a rescue effort. The footage was recorded by Lu, a local resident who noticed the unusual procession moving along the road in formation. The dogs appeared cautious but tightly coordinated, sticking together as they advanced down the highway. Several of them stayed close to an injured German shepherd, refusing to leave the wounded animal behind. A Corgi appeared to take the lead, frequently turning back as if checking that the rest of the group was still following. Lu said the dogs’ behaviour struck him immediately as unusual. Speaking to the Chinese newspaper Dahe Daily, he said: “They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison – nothing like stray dogs.” At the time, the animals were about 17 km from their home village. The video shows them steadily moving forward despite the dangers surrounding them. Concerned for their safety, Lu tried several times to guide the dogs away from traffic and toward a safer area. But the determined group refused to change course. Instead, they continued along the highway, sticking to their path and staying together. After filming the scene, Lu uploaded the footage to the Chinese social media platform Douyin. He also appealed for help from local authorities, hoping someone could intervene before the animals were hurt. That plea quickly caught attention. Volunteers from a rescue organisation called the Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base stepped in after recognising the dogs in the video. The group confirmed the animals all came from the same nearby village. Locals there said the dogs often roamed freely and had developed strong bonds with one another over time. With the dogs still somewhere along the highway, the rescue team launched a search. Volunteers were deployed on the ground while a drone was sent into the air to locate the wandering pack. The coordinated effort paid off. The dogs were eventually found and safely guided back toward their village. But the mystery of how they ended up on the highway remains unresolved. According to the South China Morning Post, one volunteer alleged the animals may have been taken by people connected to a dog meat business and escaped during transport. However, there has been no independent confirmation of that claim. By March 19, the story had a happy ending. A volunteer told Jimu News that all seven dogs had safely returned and reunited with their owners. One relieved owner said he was grateful to have both his missing German shepherd and Golden Retriever back. He added that the animals were lucky to have escaped such a fate. Another owner praised her Corgi, describing it as particularly clever and well known for being able to find its way home.
