OTP: Sino-Thai railway project prioritizes on Thailand’s benefits

BANGKOK, 28 June 2017 (NNT) - The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) has stressed that the Sino-Thai railway project will prioritize on Thailand’s benefits.

OTP Director Chaiwat Thongkhamkhun clarified that the Sino-Thai railway project is aimed at creating connectivity between Thailand, Lao People's Democratic Republic and China, which would contribute to economic and tourism benefits in line with the One belt One Road policy of the People's Republic of China.

There have been a total of 18 meetings with China over the past two years and during a bilateral meeting between the Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of China on 23 March 2016, it was settled in principle that Thailand would be the sole investor in the project. The first phase will be from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima. Then, the new rail systems will be expanded from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai in order to connect with the Lao People's Democratic Republic and to China’s rail project.

According to the outcome of the bilateral discussion, it was concluded that Thailand would be the sole investor in the project while the Chinese government will continue to cooperate in the development of high-speed trains from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima and from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai. China will design and control the construction, aid in the transfer of technology and provide training to Thai personnel.
