FPO expects 500-600,000 not to make cut for welfare

BANGKOK, 3 July 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Finance says it has yet to finalize welfare for low-income earners as it expects some 500-600,000 registrants to not pass evaluation due to their income.

Director of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) Krisada Jeenawijarana, as spokesman of the Ministry of Finance, said that finalization of all eligible people in the government’s low-income earners welfare program is expected at the end of August, mentioning that between 500 and 600,000 registrants are expected not to make criteria due to earning above the threshold for eligibility.

Nonetheless, he said initial aid measures for the impoverished will include free train and bus rides and discounts on water and electricity bills with more privileges to be discussed later. The additional measures will be based on the final number of those in need of assistance.

For the more than 14 million people have applied for state welfare who claim their annual incomes are lower than 30,000 baht, those expected not to make the criteria only amounts to about 3.5%. That's good news.

The bad news is that many in the country are still struggling financially and need assistance from the government. Deficit government spending for submarines, tanks, missiles and high speed trains isn't going to help.
