Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai

BANGKOK: -- Myanmar authorities have not sent negative signals towards Thailand after thousands of Myanmar workers in the Kingdom returned to their homeland following the enactment of the new foreign labour law, said Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai on Tuesday.

“We understand that they [Myanmary] understand that this is domestic management that needs to be done properly,” Don said, adding that his ministry has not taken action regarding the matter.

Don spoke as the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) met on Tuesday to discuss the controversial law which punishes employers with a fine of between Bt400,000-Bt800,000 for hiring illegal migrant workers.

The law enforcement, active since June 23, has caused employers to terminate the jobs of thousands of migrant workers, many of whom are from Myanmar, and send them back to their homelands.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the NCPO agreed to enact an Article 44 order, which gives absolute power to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, to delay enforcement of four articles in the law which address such punishments.

Don suggested that the delay of 120 days could help ease the impacts of the law.

He said it was expected that Myanmar will face higher unemployment following the workers’ return and it will take time for authorities there to evaluate the situation.

“Those workers can also take this time as their holidays,” he added.

“We understand that they [Myanmary] understand that this is domestic management that needs to be done properly,”

So how exactly is this being done properly? What's proper about all of this?

Of course, Myanmar will fully understand the reason why so many of their citizens are being arbitrarily fired from their jobs and sent back. Thai economy for the rest of the year will grow higher, tourism numbers will shoot up, exports will rise. As always, nothing affects Thailand!

Maybe with correct papers and work permit? (This means also correct payment.)

This latest foolish law goes a long way in explaining some of the earlier foolish laws

From what I see of  the so-called competence of some of the current ministers, I think my 10 year-old son could qualify

" Those workers can take this time as their holidays".

So, losing their jobs, expelled from the country in which they were working, almost certainly not paid any wages due up to their precipitous departue; and they can take it as a holiday!

I've heard some crass statements in my time. Some might say I have made some, and they are probably right, but this one really takes the biscuit - and it is a double coated giant chocolate digestive.

Ye Gods!

A recent report (wish I still had the link) did actually quite a Myanmar official expressing a negative view of the new legislation.

He should fire himself and consider it a holiday

An unplanned, unpaid for holiday.   Sure they are highly appreciative for the surprise holiday resulting from a poorly planned enactment of poorly thought out law.

Well, thousands of employees - desperately needed to keep the commercial wheels of Thailand turning - have been sacked, kicked out and most likely not even gotten paid.
An excellent example is the story doing its rounds of a hotel which got a new coat of paint outside; the work started at the beginning of the month, would take three weeks and done by less-than-legally-employed Cambodians. On the 27th an anonymous call to the immigration cleared the painting site which was in the process of being cleaned up, packed and ready to go. Needless to say that the workers got all arrested without pay and extradited; if and how much money of the savings by the hotel went into third channels is a matter of imagination.

Bottomline is, that only very desperate aliens from Cambodia, Laos and Burma come into Thailand taking unofficial jobs. And there will be payback time in the future, somewhen and somehow. Meanwhile the army officially kicks them out which results in "hire Thais" (who don't want to work in the first place), hampers the Thai employer's output, creates hatred and evil and will be backfiring big time one day anytime soon in the future.

Siam - quo vadis?

My guys, who are desperate for the work, can't afford the 10,000 demanded and so have disappeared for now. Any thais care to take on this 'stolen work'?  nah didn't think so!  for me the Thai 'snitch' who want's the 25% 'bounty' is excrement.

This 'bounty', i'm told, is nationwide yet unreported?

But ,Thai netizens might get their knickers in a twist when they see these mocking pics on the workers facebook pages.

This new law is akin to putting a fox in a chicken coop and telling it not to eat the chickens. Thai officials are drooling at their extra pay days.  Of course the police etc have been warned but hey the only punishment is an inactive posting.

stop spreading lies on internet, you know nothing about this migrant worker or their situation at home.

most of them get payed normal wage, you think it is so easy to let them built and then call the police?

try this and you would see with ho many knoefes in your body you will be found.

this migrannt workers nearly can´t get a passport in their home country and if it will cost them may be a 6 month salary.

we had a cook who left with many others because the police raided the places where they are living. And this peopel will not come back, only because now the prime minister found out, that this is a stupid idea and now try to put everything back on start, but

people left and more will leave, Thailand not have enougn Thai´s for the existing work , we could employ 4 and we have 1, because impossible to get any. We pay everybody the same salary. A thai would not get more or a migrant worker less, it´s about qualification!

Criticism is a lazy mans way of doing nothing. Actions speak louder than words.

Well, it happened at a five star hotel in Pattaya - and yes, I know perfectly well what background these migrant workers leave behind. I've hired hundreds of staff already - go figure!

intelligence was dropped some time back as a pre-requisite for ministers
