BANGKOK, 11 July 2017 (NNT) – The National Office of Buddhism (NOB) is looking to extend the deadline for its investigation into corruption at state temples to collect more information.

NOB Director Pol Lt Col Pongporn Phramsaneh has said that while information has been constantly forwarded to police and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), if the investigation into temple corruption reaches its 60 day deadline without uncovering all needed data, the timeframe could be expanded.

Addressing discoveries that major temples have been receiving unusually large budgets, the office director said there are no set parameters for how much budget can be allotted to a temple, noting only that royal temples are first considered when funds are being dispersed.

Police over the past week have probed 12 temples suspected of graft finding possible lost funds worth over 60 million baht. They also found some 10 officials in the NOB likely involved in the graft and have turned them into the NACC.
