BANGKOK: -- Rubber Authority of Thailand governor Titus Suksaard has asked Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha to help keep the price of latex at no less than Bt40 per kilogram after it dipped to Bt41 yesterday.

Titus and other authority officials met Prayut prior to the Cabinet meeting to promote para-rubber products and related innovations under the theme “Rubber for Modern Living”.

Prayut viewed a display of products including a mask used as protection against harmful chemicals that cost Bt15,000 to make – Bt10,000 less than an imported equivalent. He was also shown a para-rubber “slash-guard” handbag able to repel pickpockets’ knives.

The premier instructed the Agriculture Ministry to make a list of state agencies’ uses of rubber so that a budget could be allocated to help manufacturers meet domestic demand and promote the use of para-rubber across the country. Prayut said the government would resolve the problem of sliding rubber prices and seek the cooperation of other countries. He said the Commerce Ministry was trying to get China to use more Thai rubber.

“This is why Thailand must be friendly with all countries, such as China, which has ordered a lot of rubber from Thailand,” Prayut said. “Everything is regarded in terms of reciprocal moves that bring mutual benefit.”

The premier said the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry must meanwhile halt land-encroachment problems linked to rubber plantations, and the Agriculture Ministry must encourage farmers to switch from rubber to alternative crops such as fruit.

“I want rubber growers to grow high-value fruits too so their plantations will have diverse produces. The government will try to increase rubber demand within the country, such as in road building, futsal field construction or making army vehicle tyres,” he said.

The Southern rubber producers are lucky to be getting 40baht a kilo, the current price here in Buriram is 19baht a kilo. Some producers are not bothering to tap their trees, saying it's not worth the effort for such a low remuneration.

The good general should use his S-44 super weapon to increase the price in international market to 100 Baht a kilo.

He tried rubber bullets on a certain population group a few years back but found them less effective than the lead/copper variety.

This is a global issue.  Same happening everywhere until demand returns from enough Rubber plantations switching to fruit or palm oil.

May I suggest that all police stations, immigration offices and other government offices be paneled in rubber? Make it safer when we are bouncing off the walls.

There's no need.

Just yesterday Prayut affirmed that the government's efforts have been taken to address the sustained rubber price crisis and that the worst was over

Wasn't it only a few days ago that the PM boldly declared his military coup financial experts had stabilised the price of rubber for Thailand producers and would continue to provide happy prospects for farmers? Then this clear expression of concern arises, and some farmers are even being offered as little as 19 Baht? How can military people backed by weapons to enforce/support their grand plans for a nation expect that citizens would believe people whose training and skills are all about blowing things up and killing people when necessary have the broad range of expertise and knowledge required to run a democracy?  This ëconomic "expertise" seems to be blowing up in the authorities' faces - delusion confronted by reality within hours. Why do military "ëxperts" want to suck ordinary people into their private fantasies (and risk financial and social collapse while so doing) instead of sticking to their narrow skillsets? Couldn't they find happiness just terrifying outsiders only?

Is the rubber industry thinking about  re-tiring?

Serious note: I read somewhere that Thailand manufactures 80% of tyres used worldwide.

So tread carefully.

If you say so

I am not a Junta fan, but the price of rubber depends from the state of supply and demand, not from the poor economic performance of the Junta.

The question is rather: can the Junta let down the people who have contributed to the coup by protesting against YL, because they were told they would get a better price for rubber?
