Thinking of working in Thailand? Here are the 39 things that you can't do!

I didn't want to start down this path, but I can't imagine anyone making a career of teaching at 1/8-1/4 the salary they can make back home doing the same.  A few years as an adventure?  Sure.  But the power of the poon seems so often to change that year or two adventure to a career.

Gotta admit, my life would have looked a lot different had I tasted it 30 years earlier.  Maybe a good thing I didn't, maybe I missed out.

"Back home" most would not be qualified for a teaching position.

if i discovered thailand in my early twenties i probably would have misspent that decade visiting thailand. dont know if i would have been desperate enough to teach english however.

Lots of guys I know fell for the "Don't worry, I can't get pregnant because...." line, and then the choices sure narrowed down.  Teaching English sure beats selling part of the stash to pay for the rest of it.

There but for the Grace of God (or Luck of the Draw for you atheists)

I think it is a mistake to try to list all the jobs that a foreigner cannot do

there's always going to be hybrid jobs in the middle of classifications that raise all kinds of questions

just summarize it by saying ,as many people do ,anything that a Thai can do is prohibited to a farang

want to do,  actually do, or capable of doing, are in conflict with "can do..."

I agree totally, it would be much easier to print what you can do... one thing & one thing only..

1) Hand over all your money then bugger-off back home!

That's not a fair characterization, because the vast majority of the expats I know work side by side with Thai's, doing pretty much the same job.  There's a component of skills transfer and training, but lots of us are working jobs that educated Thai's could do.

23) Not making images of the Buddha. The Thais who constructed this list do  not seem to be aware that Buddha instructed all followers not to make any images of him in any form.

The Buddhist Monks however seem to have forgotten to past this ordinance on  to the humble Buddhist worshippers at the temples throughout the land. I suppose that would interfere with the plans for the commercial marketing of Buddha.

If they're qualified for TEFL in Thailand, they're likely qualified in their home country. A CELTA or Trinity certificate and maybe a degree is sufficient. Unfortunately TEFL jobs in the UK tend to be seasonal and are not paid much more than in Thailand!

The irony is that out of that list of jobs many Thais WILL NOT DO as those jobs

become beneath them......

Like what kind of jobs, please explain...???

You need to qualify that. Anything a Thai can do well or competently is prohibited.

Thais that decide to live in Europe are treated with respect, and have the same rights as everybody else, so why doesn't Thailand reciprocate?

The country is ironically dependent on foreign investment, foreign tourism, and exports to foreign lands, and yet it treats foreigner in Thailand with utter contempt.

When I look at this at face value, you realize how racist and xenophobic the country has become. Until Thailand reforms this repugnant law, and their outdated attitude, then it will not be considered anything less than a banana republic.

A coco nut republic would sound better:tongue:

It's not on the list of forbidden occupations. Neither is bar management.

How many pimp bar managers do you think have a work permit then?

29. Civil engineering work including design, quantity surveying, organization, research, testing, looking after the progress of work, and giving advice (exception: specialist work).   It's now obvious to me why Jomtien has light poles taking up 40% of NEW sidewalks and why it takes them over a year to install 100 meters of storm drain before turning the job over to the city to finish.  Of course the rest of the boardwalk has this wonderful homemade steps and a nice drop for the kids onto the lower walk.  Lame is what I see.

Yes. TEFL teaching is poorly paid everywhere. I actually earn more doing it here now (after 13 years) than I could doing it in the UK.

Looks like I'm OK, financing improvements to my legal wife & mothers farm which include mixing fertilizer etc,  applying at the correct rate & time, programing the watering system to apply the correct amount of water at the required rate. making sure the cows get the required amount of food each day & heir regular check up's etc, you know all the technical stuff & providing the finance.

How do I get a WIP for this ?

Here is a list of things that Thais believe they are better than the rest of the world at and could not possibly benefit from learning from other nations that are better developed.

It's utterly disgusting and one of many things holding this otherwise wonderful country and its people firmly in the past.

Do western countries have restrictions on the type of job a foreigner can do? ??

In England they will give you a house and a month's wages before you do anything..

Not that I know of. Most of them can see the advantage of hiring people that can do a better job.
