BANGKOK, 19 July 2017 (NNT) – The Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports has taken a tour of the Street Food project on Khao San road in a bid to build confidence among tourists.

Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Pongpanu Svetarundra led a group including the head of the Tourist Police and Phra Nakhon District officials to visit vendors and hawkers along popular tourist destination Khao San Road. The visit was part of a push to promote night tourism based on a government project enhancing the area’s street food.

Pongpanu pointed out Thailand’s street food culture is a major draw for international tourists and that Khao San Road hosts some 170 such vendors, able to generate up to 750 million baht in revenue annually. He asked all involved to be mindful of hygiene standards as well as the safety of visitors to ensure a positive and long lasting impression.

He urged tourist police and tourism support centers, especially those in the 15 provinces best known for tourism, to build trust and confidence in visitors and to bolster Thailand’s image as a destination for travel.

Hasn't anybody told the Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports that the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority want all street food vendors banned from Bangkok by the end of this year with Khao San Road specifically named as one of the target areas?

Khao San Road needs little promotion.  Many of the guest houses are busy and the area keeps expanding much to the chagrin of TAT's quality, stay in 5 star hotels, Australian tourist drive.

Promoting food safety, on the other hand, is a wonderful idea.  Supporting these vendors with places to was and clean is a wonderful idea.

Why is it that confidence is the last thing I'm feeling when I see a band of officials in photo op mode surrounded by security guys in uniform?

I just can't find any street food, or tourists in this pic. Looks more like he is promoting middle-aged bureaucrats and chubby police.

So street food is OK in Khao San Rd but not in the rest of BKK? They banned it for health and hygiene reasons but the tourist area is exempt.
