Government asks Tourism ministry to come up with some cheap travel insurance options to pull in more tourists

BANGKOK: -- The government is asking the tourism ministry and related agencies to come up with cheap travel insurance packages to increase tourism.

Daily News reported that government deputy Thanasak Patimaprakorn wants tourists visiting Thailand to have some local options for

accident insurance.

The government stated that they will not be paying any of the premiums themselves. Only in exceptional emergency circumstances can the government take on some of the costs.

That might be in political unrest or in cases where tourists get caught up in bombs where funds can be made available for tourists whose policies would not cover such eventualities.

I hope they drop this brilliant idea before they cockit up and become the laughing stock of the world.

After they exclude the normal daily stuff here, they will only cover you from immigration to baggage claim. Welcome to Thailand and have a safe underinsured holiday!

"The government is asking the tourism ministry and related agencies to come up with cheap travel insurance packages to increase tourism."

Why not just make the roads safer, crack down on rip off artists (e.g. Jet Ski operators), and discriminatory pricing for public parks and attractions. I'm sure that would be a lot more appealing than sending the message: "When you get seriously injured while vacationing in the LOS, you can now afford to be hospitalized."

You've shot yourself in the foot, again. Travel insurance won't increase tourist traffic.

A good exchange rate, cheap whores, and no scams will.

Another occasion when I wished the "Like" feature was working

"Government asks Tourism ministry to come up with some cheap  affordable    travel insurance options to pull in attract more tourists"

Cheap...........low quality, dubious, shoddy.

Pull in...........lure, entice, seduce, beguile.

Thailand, a "cheap" destination pulling in the punters?

You mean it's not going to be quality insurance?

Can't wait to see the policy terms and costs? This should make for a popular post and lots of laughs.

Agreed, what I find hilarious is their failure to see the irony of the statements they make.

Most tourists ( I always do) have holiday insurance - what is needed is the operators and businesses  to have proper insurance - Snorkeling trips, jet skis, ferry boats, coach companies, parascending operators, taxi companies, zip line rides, fair ground rides, parachute rides, car rental, motorbike rental.......have I covered everything that kills and maims tourists here  ? If I have not please add to the list.....

Weeell as an alternative option, they might learn to treat tourist's as the guest's they are,, limit the possibilities of them getting ripped off by the numerous scammers, taxis, etc,,,, Quit making those that actually live here as expats, jump through hoops to stay legally,,, It's insane to require someone that's lived in the same place for 5-10+ years, to STILL report in every 90 days,,,, And investigate, "suspicious" Farlang deaths more than 5 minutes before declaring them suicides,,,, Just a thought,,,,,

IMO it will take one tourist to be involved in a motorbike accident and find they are not covered on their 'cheap policy'.............

You do get what you pay for in this instance. Most of the time.

Do you really think people are going to make a decision in coming to Thailand because they have Bomb insurance Common Get real I can see it now

"Hey honey I think we should go to Thailand rather than China and Japan I see the government is offering cheap Bomb accident insurance "

Who are these people who think up these schemes :cheesy:

You think they understand irony ?

Might be a small chance if it was in the form of sitcom cartoon characters with explanatory notes in speech bubbles.

Full Moon parties, mooning on the beach at night, water at Koh Tao, ladyboys in Pattaya, balconies, Rice Whisky, character vetted taxi drivers, footpaths, mountain springs lakes and waterfalls, ocean at Pattaya....boom boom of over 65 years of age, cheap Viagra substitutes...... one page schedule insurance, six pages of exemptions!!!!

Why not a governmental scheme for a non-profit catastrophic insurance coverage for all visiting foreigners?
Make it 90-day units and renew at every 90 days reporting.
That would at least make the reporting schedule sort of make sense.
