BMA governor Aswin Kwanmuang

BANGKOK: -- Alarmed at the amount of garbage being discarded along public roads, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) governor Aswin Kwanmuang has ordered that signs be posted warning of fines and that the worst areas be patrolled.

Saying the dumping of construction materials, tree branches and general garbage along city roads leads to disorderly and unhygienic conditions, Aswin wants to put residents on notice that the practice is illegal.

Aswin said BMA workers had on Sunday alone collected 700 tonnes of garbage along a road running parallel to the Kanchanapisek Expressway.

Although the area is within the jurisdiction of the Expressway Authority of Thailand and Highway Department, he said, BMA workers based in Sai Mai and Khlong Sam Wa districts cleared the garbage for the sake of cleanliness and order.

But they can’t keep up with the amount of waste that’s piling up, he complained.

Aswin instructed all 50 Bangkok district offices to survey empty land for garbage being dumped and contact the landlords to clean up any messes found, fence off the areas and erect anti-littering signs. He said city Thesakij law-enforcement officials would periodically patrol the worst areas and the BMA would install CCTV cameras in some places.

Residents in such areas will also be asked to report illegal dumping to the authorities.

About time. I used to travel in that area regularly and the rate that building site waste was being dumped was ridiculous. Definitely not the odd pick-up doing a late night quikee dump.

Hot air as usual. We reported fly tipping to the BMA previously at the entrance to our Moo Bahn near Seacon Square and they came and put up some "Magic Eyes" banners warning of fines etc. The dumping did not stop and soon the Magic Eyes banners were buried under mountains of litter including construction materials and old beds. Magic Eyes has since given up and has disbanded. The BMA has never collected the rubbish and recently the BMA came and cut some tree branches and dumped them on a building plot instead of taking them away.

They have the "dob in a motorcycle/car on sidewalks" thing running...why not extend it to "dob in a person dumping/throwing trash" from a vehicle......both with a monetary reward to the person providing the details of the "trasher"

There would be good money to be made if the 700 tons recently collected from the  road running parrallel to the Kanchanapisek Expressway is anything to go by....:coffee1:

A day late and a dollar short. That said I doubt there will be any significant

changes to peoples attitude of "if everyone else stops, my littering will not make

a difference so no problem for me."
