Haven't looked back to see if they've been mentioned but my all-time favorite British band is Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny at lead vocal.

Absolutely the best concert I've ever wittnessed in person. :o

You are supposed to read my posts old buddy. I read all of yours.

I brought them up on post #10! :D

Then there's the Strawbs. Saw them in Leeds just after Rick Wakeman joined. Downright incredible.

Rick Wakeman is incredible on his own, coupled with the Strawbs they ascended to all new levels.

My comment about U2 earlier, the reason why I like music so much is that it tends to transcend all socio/political/race/religion boundaries..... well, it does in the UK anyway.

It's perfectly acceptable for me to like U2, even though Bono is a pretentious millionaire socialist (did anybody mention Mick Hucknell or JK)

The British Isles is the British Isles, it would be completely unfair to exclude part of the archipelago just because it isn't attached to the big bit..... U2 would in all certainty not enjoy being called 'British'... but they well deserve a mention in British pop culture, and would probably complain if they didn't get one.

Tears for Fears

Ahhh........ The Cult.... we are not worthy ..... great band recorded, live, fantastic ..... (dare I mention Ned's Atomic Dustbin)

One I will mention, The Stranglers, my mother thought that Hugh Cornwell was the sexiest man walking the planet..... she was 65 years young when she said that, she knew all the words to 'Peaches' too.

XTC

(XTC is the name of a group I greatly admired, not an abbreviated state of mind :D )

Agreed! :D

America invented Rock N' Roll and we have had some wonderful, amazing singing groups, however, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin beat any American bands hands down.

When it comes to modern music, Britannica still rules the waves! :o

You are a wise man indeed.

:o Amazing and unbelievable that almost nobody mentioned the unforgettable:

QUEEN with FREDDY MERCURY

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN ??????

And I've got one, two, three, four, five, senses working overtime, trying to take this all in. I've got one, two, three, four, five, senses working overtime, trying to taste the difference between a lemon and a lime, pain and pleasure, and the church bells softly chime.

Fantastic stuff.

Squeeze. (Jools Holland.... mainly)

(P.S. I mentioned Queen about twenty post ago :o )

Squeeze. (Jools Holland.... mainly)

Fantastic British band but without Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook's quintessential English working class lyrics and spot on harmonies they would be just another band. Holland is an excellent pianist but nowhere near as integral to Squeeze as the aforementioned singer/songwriter duo.

Holland left in 1980, whilst Squeeze's most successful LP , 'East Side Story' came out in 1982. Pretty much all of Squeeze's hits were penned by Difford/Tilbrook.

Another great Band band IMO were the Jam. I still listen to Weller's music these days , nice stuff.

XTC, also very clever chaps.

Anybody remember 'The Only One's', or 'The Blue Aeroplanes' ?

:o

I know we mentioned U2, an Irish band, how about another Irish band Thin Lizzy!
