Bang Lamung district chief Naris Niramaiwong continued his crusade to rid Pattaya of gambling with a raid on a casino operating openly at Jomtien beach.

The raid in conjunction with the military and police netted 33 gamblers playing "pok deng" cards.

Many of those arrested were women and old folk who couldn't run away.

As the raid began many able bodied gamblers scattered and jumped over walls to hide in neighboring houses.

Some got away despite the place being surrounded, reported Tnews. Some were injured in trying to escape.

Naris - who took down a group of grannies playing the Thai card game Dummy the other week - said this was a big casino.

He had received a report from military chief Suwit Laklang that the casino, already raided by the army in April, was continuing to operate without fear.

Evidence gathered pointed to the operation having a turnover of 14 million baht, he said. And it was in operation 24 hours a day with a steady stream of visitors.

Rungroj Phayungwong, 47, who was in charge and the rest of the gamblers successfully captured were handed over to Pattaya station chief Apichai Krobpetch for prosecution.

Taken into evidence were cards, two computer tablets, a baize table and 17, 080 baht.

Naris said that his operation to raid gambling dens in the resort would continue.

However.....we didn't see it, as they were paying us off.

They quit paying us, so we decided to raid it.

It's well to discourage poor people from gambling, esp. unregulated gambling where it's more likely they're being cheated. I've seen Thais lose so much in fixed games of pok deng they had to borrow money and pawn their household appliances. So in this case the police may be doing these people a favor. Think about whether you'd want your Thai mother-in-law there.

And recently there have been prominent posts here suggesting that the Pattaya & Jomtien areas could be a serious property investment / the Thai Macau equivalent ,  as reformation on the Thai gambling laws was being considered . That looks very unlikely given the current army stance .

Totally agree, in that gambling is idiotic.

I mean, it's a lot of fun when you play with nickels & dimes or Monopoly money.

Why people want to bet large sums is beyond me?

The picture speaks a thousand words and in this case it spells total embarrassment for all concerned . I feel so sorry for the small time gamblers having a bit of fun and what a total waste of government resources ,  they aint gonna stop it any time soon , bit like the oldest profession in the world , time for a change maybe ?    Where i stay , not too far from the Chong Chom border crossing there are cavalcades of Thai tourist buses going to the casinos every day and I would imagine is the same at other borders .

So why is it that other Buddhist countries allow gambling ?    The Thai government are missing out on big revenues , plus why the conflict that horse racing and the lottery are allowed ?      When is this country going to catch up on the fundamentals  ? I cannot see any logical reason not to  .
