HAT YAI: -- Police in Hat Yai have announced the arrest of a homeless Udon man who murdered a construction worker at the weekend.

Phrom, 45, was found stabbed to death with a large knife and beaten about the head with a hammer just 15 meters from the Ban Hak police booth in Hat Yai.

Chief of police in Songkhla Sakda Charoenkun announced the arrest of 31 year old Thaweesak, a rag and bone man from Udon Thani.

The murderer was arrested while riding his victim's bicycle on Rat-uthit Road in the southern Thai town. Taken into evidence was the bicycle, a foot long knife and the clothes of the murderer worn during the crime.

Thaweesak said that he was sniffing glue and drinking lao khao spirit when Phrom arrived at the "sala". Like him Phrom was also drunk.

He said that Phrom had a go at his mother so he got a large knife and stabbed him three times. He then finished him off with blows to the head with a hammer that was in the victim's possession.

He dragged the corpse to the side of the sala and dumped it there.

He then stole the victim's bike and roasted sticky rice and went to find a place to sleep nearby.

Police said that Thaweesak had a record of three previous drug offences, one for theft and one for drink driving.

Thaweesak bought and sold second hand goods in the area.
