BANGKOK: -- Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai has said that Thailand is not “too enthusiastic” about working on a proposed meeting between Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha and the US President Donald Trump.

“Actually, it’s us whom they [the US] want to speak to,” Don said. “It’s not about who wants it to happen more. But we have come to mutually agree that the meeting should take place.”

During a phone conversation In April, Trump invited Prayut to meet with him in the US.

In late June, Prayut told relevant government agencies to prepare information for the meeting at the White House.

The Thai government had said the meeting was scheduled for late July but was postponed and the new date undetermined.

Prayut will meet with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday after the latter’s attendance at the Asean ministerial meetings in Manila.

While in Bangkok, Tillerson will pay his respects to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Agendas for Prayut’s meeting with Tillerson are centred on bilateral and multilateral issues, with a possible emphasis on the denuclearisation of North Korea and attempts to write a code of conduct for the South China Sea.

Since that April g'day Buddy phone call I suspect that Trump has been briefed by his Foreign Affairs Department including Embassy officials and is now a wake up to what this military government is up to and it's agenda with the so called election and censorship.

Appears now like Tillerson will be the man so Prayut will just have to get used to it.

The Don is in a desperate face saving mode on behalf of the PM.

On a serious note, Thailand should be more concerned about NK saying that its missiles are intended for the USA...and its allies. Mr. PM I fear you may have a decision to make pretty soon.

nah; NK has a hard-on for the usa

Trump suffers from major ADD - he'll say anything and forget about it 6 minutes later. The Foreign Minister  DOn was doing his job .... damping down something the Donald likely has no memory of.

Good Job for the Thai FM Don!

In a meeting with Tillerson in Thailand, it would be more a diplomatic protocol  that Secretary of State Tillerson meet with the Thai Foreign Minister than with the Head of Government Prayut. That would prevent any "inappropriate" commitments or promises from being made between the countries without consultation or concurrence by the two country's Head of Governments.

You certainly are not implying democracy in the US or the EU is any better?

If you think democracy is elections you are right, but it is all about what the elected will do after being elected.

And the track record of the elected is not really a shining example of democracy, is it?

It is.

The fact that US

  • has held elections over a span of more than 200 years without interruption or violation of the Constitution is in itself a shining example of democracy.
  • has had 45 peaceful elected presidential regime changes without interruption or violation of the Constitution is a shining example of democracy.
  • adhered for more than 200 years to a system of governmental checks & balance to forestall an abuse of power is a shining example of democracy.
  • the existence of an uninterrupted track record of local, state and national elections is a shining example of democracy.
  • never had a military coup or minority oligarchy control the government is a shining example of democracy.

Looking forward to this. A different agenda on both sides. One concerned about what's going on in SE Asia, and the other about a poetry recital in the white house

Seems as they both deserve one another.....
