Yes, the vast nation of Japan with a broken economy was in the same strategic position as the USSR. It's not like it was an island.  In addition to which if the USA did decide to attack the USSR. it didn't have any atom bombs left. By the time the US came up with them, Western Europe could have been overrun. You also don't seem aware that in Western Europe the USSR was considered heroic. Not only that, but communist and socialist movement were very strong. I'm sure the US army would have loved having an angry and resentful populace at its back.
