Seven upper southern provinces placed under maximum alert

 

 

Security was placed at maximum in upper southern provinces as intelligence officials warned of possible violent attacks to mark one year anniversary of the Aug 11-12, 2016 sabotage.

 

On August 11-12 last year, 10 bombs went off and five arsons broke out at commercial areas, convenience stores, marketplaces in  seven upper southern provinces–Phuket, Trang, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phangnga and Krabi.

 

Four people were killed and 32 others injured in what the police described as “local subotage”. Security officers initially believed the attacks were linked to politics as it took place only a few days after the Aug 7 constitutional referendum.

 

Following the incident, arrest warrants were issued for 10 suspects and investigation later showed most of them came from the deep South. Some of them were also found to be southern militants with records of violent attacks in the South.

Ah.  That is why we need submarines. To deal with "local subotage."

Was wondering why the check points on the highways were been manned by army and police again !!

I won't be going into town for a few days then :)

Could?  At least some degree of that is highly likely.  That is why the BIB are calculating manpower requirements.

Based on the possibilities surrounding the rice scam verdict there could be a lot of road block vheck points in more than just the southwest.

Or maybe nothing happens.  And even if they do, the odds of you being the victim of a 'terrorist' attack are astronomical.  Your odds of getting killed on Thai roads are magnitudes greater.

I refuse - absolutely refuse - to cower to terrorism.

What a wonderful influence is islam. So many too scared to mention it, so the murders just continue.

Thai authorities were quick to rule out Islamist or international terrorism, instead blaming “local sabotage”.

“This is not a terrorist attack. It is just local sabotage that is restricted to limited areas and provinces,” the national police deputy spokesman, Piyapan Pingmuang.

When an insurgency is motivated by the loss of sovereignty, it's politics regardless of any religious affiliation. It's not "local sabotage."

The 2016 constitutional referendum may have been perceived by insurgents to further suppress freedoms of Southern Muslims with a more strict Buddhist autocracy which would explain the Southern vote being largely against the draft constitution and demonstration of violence. From that viewpoint nothing has changed since last year.

 

The Southern Provinces never had martial law lifted as in the rest of Thailand. Placing the provinces under "maximum alert" is just incendiary language that will only motivate insurgents to meet the government's challenge. Violence will continue.

Don't let the lack of a work permit stop you going South and helping out! I'm sure bomb disposal has a few vacancies.

To be accurate...

Prachuap Khiri Khan is not in the South. The South is from Chumphon to Malaysia, and includes the other six provinces named in the OP,  but Prachuap is actually part of the Central region.

 

There is no martial law in Thailand. The three and a half southernmost provinces (half of Songkhla) are under Thaksin's six-month special emergency act which has been renewed every six months by every government since Thaksin. It's a pretty onerous act, but there are differences with martial law.

Yes, well its ok to refuse - absolutely refuse - to cower to terrorism, whilst the odds against you being a victim remain 'astromomical'.. different scenario if black-clad guys turn up in front of you, or anyone else, with semi-automatics and/ or suicide-bomb vests!!!

One incident is local sabotage, but 15 coordinated attacks? Well that's another thing entirely. Let's hope nothing happens to mark it.

More deaths are on the way with these clowns working as security enforcers.
