Belgian couple say they were robbed by “Thai police”

While their story seems a little strange...please do nt discount that the their are a lot of criminals withing the thai police force and also the thai army. With a lot of thais getting desperate as the economy is really bad...foreigners are a target .There is a big media story in the thai media just a few days ago (but very little coverage in the english media...only one mention in the bangkok post) about a group of policemen and also a thai army general along with a Singaporean Chinese guy (Koh Teck Chuan....goggle the name plus bangkok and you will find the story) that have been targetting rich Chinese, Malaysians, Singaporeans, and other Asians and extorting them etc. Thailand is really going down the pits.

Day before home trip we were suddenly stopped at a intersection by a local policeman and immediately surrounded by other policemen who pulled off all our stuff from us and said we had to follow them, they dragged us in a taxi and escorted us to a police station, there they stuffed us in a dark room with seven policemen one of them pulled the golden chain from my neck. They threatened to stop us in prison for three days, unless we would pay them. One of them wrote 40,000 bht on a paper we tried to explain we did not have that amount of money with us which they did not believe, for an hour they've putting us under pressure at last they got tired and toke only 100 Euro cash from us. When I lied about the golden chain that's not golden they trowed luckily back to me.

That day we were robbed by the Bangkok police.

However just to be clear, my response was to a post that endulged in victim blaming, in this case, people holidaying in Thailand and/or Asia (except Japan).

 

This would indicate foreigners, hence my post.

Seems a bit fishy. It is not uncommon for Thai people to pretend they are police and rob people. Has happened a few times to the older Thai folk in our village. Young Thai know to ask for some sort of ID, old Thai do not. Seems tourists also do not.

Wouldn't think it matters too much if you ask for ID or not. If they are going to rob you they are going to do it regardless whether they are the Police or some phonies.
Everything points to the latter.

It matters as they don't generally target the people who do ask (more clued up people if you like). As if they get caught then that is just another charge the police can throw at them. Older folk/tourists are easy targets, can get in with no force by saying you're police, and after that all descriptions are very vague/hard to prove.

Quite possibly. Heard and sat in on hundreds of cases like it by various nationalities while working with the Guardia Civil in Spain as an independent translator. The fraud is usually to pay for said holiday!

First of all, does claiming to be police mean they were police? And secondarily, the whole story sounds fishy. Though there certainly are alot of corrupt cops here, it does not sound like their typical M.O. A bit too desperate? 

 

Lastly, how dare they question the fine reputation of the RTP? They are one of the world's finest law enforcement agencies. In terms of expertise, their forensic departments give the FBI, and Scotland Yard a real run for their money. How dare they? Same can be said for their outstanding detectives.

I think this is a feasible story. The men 'claimed' they were Police, possibly lying to intimidate the couple. 

 

I'm sure we'll see an announcement from the Thai Police claiming that this robbery was not by the BiB but by criminals falsely making the claim that they are Police.

definitely agree is NOT insurance scam, not for 100 Euros and a broken necklace- but as for the multiple other (not by you, but i'll address it here) comments judging the victims as "looking as if they don't make 8000 baht a month", etc- that is way out of line, it is not appropriate to pejoratively slag others for perceived wealth or poverty or class or status-

some of the richest people i've ever known putter around town in white T-shirts and blue jeans during the day,  

even here, it's a status symbol of sorts that offspring of the rich ferquently wear new  white T-shirt during day under an exotic/expensive jacket as symbol that they don't work, therefore there is nothing to stain or wrinkle their white T's
