Thanks Ubonjoe..always get mix up with permit n visas , so Aussies come in Thailand on Permits and not visas?

The visa, if you have one, is mainly only relevant at the point you arrive in Thailand. On arrival, you are given a permission to stay that indicates the date on which you must leave the country or receive an extension of your permission to stay. Apart from the length of stay (60 days versus 30 days) the permission to stay you receive when entering with a tourist visa or entering visa exempt are exactly equivalent.

There is one other way a visa (and the type of visa) is relevant to your future stay in Thailand. Extensions of permission to stay that you can qualify for depends on whether you have a tourist entry (tourist visa or visa exempt) or non immigrant entry (entry with one of the various favors of non immigrant visas).

Not exactly.

Aussies qualify for the tourist visa exempt scheme which simply means they don't need a visa to "come in".

Everyone, whether using a visa or not, receives permission to stay (a permit) when they enter the country.
