Van driver rewarded for returning 3,300 euros to tourist

By The Nation

A tourist van driver at Phuket International Airport was honoured on Saturday for returning a bag containing 3,300 euros (Bt129,000) in cash to a Bangladeshi tourist.

Airport director Phet Chuncharoen held a small ceremony at the auditorium on the fifth floor of the Phuket airport office building to reward Pornpong Klaithongkham, 40.

Pornpong drives a van that takes foreign tourists from the airport to various tourist destinations in the island-province.

On August 11, he found a leather handbag with 3,300 euro banknotes. He contacted tourist police at the airport who later found the owner, Mohaiminur Reza, 32, who stayed at a Patong hotel.

The tourist was happy and offered 200 euros to Pornpong as reward.

I never understand why these stories are news. Returning things that are left in taxis and hotels are just common decency, and in many places are the law.

In places like this, the headlines and shocking news would be "Van driver steals 3,300 euros from tourist".

It's good to see Thais being recognized for their honesty.  Good looks, money and status are more important than honesty, integrity and hard work here. The only way that will change is if more emphasis on good moral character is encouraged by the media, education and society in general.

Please stop reporting and encouraging good news stories like this.

You know how much it enrages the Thai bashers on the forum.  :bah:

As for me, I am glad to see this happening and I would love to see more good news stories about Thailand.

For the Thai bashers, I can only repeat what my drill sergeant said to me many years ago.

"If you can't take a joke, then you shouldn't have joined".

200 Euros?? Tighta**se

I am aware there are too many stupid people in the world and also a lot of honest folk, but I hesitate to believe that so many are capable of leaving loose packages of cash or valuables in taxis and vans, while visiting a foreign country.

These stories are far too frequent.

I would cut a newbie visitor some slack. Excited, too much rubber necking, even over tired from long flights.

Why? About 6% not enough? Honestly how much would mr kadilo give?

If i remember correct 3% are the norm.

There's a norm for people
Leaving money in taxis?

I would be more generous but I accept 200euros is a nice gift for one honesty.

Fair enough, could happen.
