Yingluck verdict: ‘We’ve got situation under control,’ say security chief

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- National Security Council secretary-general General Thawip Netniyom has expressed confidence that there will not be unruly scenes following Friday’s verdict in former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s negligence trial.

Thawip said security on Friday will be the same as during the trial.

Speaking at Tuesday’s mobile Cabinet meeting in Nakhon Ratchasima province, he said security personnel will assess the situation.

He said he is confident the number of personnel earmarked for the verdict will be enough.

There have been reports that the authorities moved to block Yingluck’s upcountry supporters from attending the verdict, including making activists sign a contract promising not to cause a disturbance on the day.

Thawip said the authorities had acted to create a mutual understanding.

They say that if you really want something in life you can have it. Unfortunately, the deluded and feckless haven't assumed that you have to work hard for it. Wishful thinkers.

I somehow suspect that will depend largely on the verdict. If it is a guilty with a jail sentence, it would not surprise me at all for things to get ugly.

Police ready to ensure public safety and order at Supreme Court

BANGKOK, 23rd August 2017 (NNT) - The police are ready to ensure public safety and order at the Supreme Court when judges deliver the verdict in the rice-pledging case against former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

The Tung Song Hong police station has been transformed into a command center to be in charge of security operations on August 25 when Ms. Yingluck will travel to the court to hear the verdict.

On the day, deputy national police chief, Pol. Gen. Srivara Ransibrahmanakul, will oversee the entire operation amid concerns of possible violence when a big crowd of Yingluck's supporters are expected to be present.

Meanwhile, Secretary-General of the National Council for Peace and Order, Gen. Chalermchai Sittisart, said that related agencies have been instructed to make sure all officers follow their instructions, with the police responsible for the overall situation and law enforcement, while the Interior Ministry and the NCPO will stand by to provide support, if needed.

Gen. Chalerchai estimated that there will be between 3,000 and 3,500 supporters at the court on Friday, the day of the verdict.

If it's guilty then I'll be out cheering in the street. If there's a jail sentence I might even have a beer.
