Car falls into open manhole on SCC

 

 

PATTAYA:--The war zone known as Soi Siam Country Club claimed another victim, a car that drove into an uncovered drainage cover obscured by all the construction.

 

No one was injured in the Aug. 24 wreck in front of the Darul Ibadah Mosque and witnesses banded together to pull the vehicle out of the hole.

 

Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit said drainage covers are just one of the many things delayed in the long-running project to lay new flood-control pipes and widen the street to four lanes.

Looks like no on figured on needing manhole covers. I would hate to see a bike fall in one.

I wonder how long more it will take before the Nongprue administration gets investigated.

 

Anyone seen those lamp posts they installed all the way from Nonghin to SSCC, or the road they recently laid between SSCC and Chayapornvit?

I saw that happen on Soi Kaonoi when new drains were being put in and they were at the stage before this when the hole was about 8 foot square. It rained pretty hard, the holes were swallowed by the water and a bike and rider, rode straight down one. He was very lucky to get pulled out alive.

Looks like a driver didn't figure the significance of a great lump of red and white painted concrete blocking accidental access to the hole.

 

It's that curiously lacking  spatial awareness gene again, too busy looking ahead at the noodle shop they wanted to eat at.

 

Anyway, according to google maps, the Darul Ibadah Mosque is the one on the west side of Sukhumvit, near Index Mall. The two nearest mosques on SSCC are between the railroad rack and the market. I think this buggered up bit of SSCC falls under the Pattaya City remit so don't know why the Nongprue chief dog catcher is commenting. His bit of SSCC is the almost finished bit to the east of the market all the way to the lake and up to Pong.

Perfectly logical and acceptable to a Thai. The rest of us? Nah. The locals think we're too fussy about things like that.

to be fair, that section of the road look closed to traffic, with the albeit sparse placement of the concrete blocks and all, the driver here thinks he can outsmart the rest of the schmuck waiting in line by  overtake/undertaking all of them using the under construction road... serves him right

Looks like he/she was trying to drive around the concrete barrier to get there (wherever) first. Serves him/her right.

Driving without due care and attention 

On the other hand it might be criminal negligence on the part of the construction company.
The drivers have enough to contend with allready (almost sensory overload) avoiding all the other traffic,pedestrians,soi dogs,hanging wires ,advertising signs.

When soi Buakhow was concreted a few years ago they left all the drain holes open and unmarked..I almost drove into one at the south Pattaya road end..foolish of me to think that a road (although under construction)
open for public use would be safe to actually use !

Yes.. it is like the drivers who pull into gas stations and drive straight through hoping to get 2 cars in front of their original position in a traffic queue.

In this case the road has been dug up for Months. It's daylight, the holes are along the side and not easily accessible.

The driver has either tried to park and not noticed the holes or tried to take a short cut and not noticed the holes.

Maybe, if there was no warning signage/lighting and an unsuitable cover had been used to top the hole  and it collaped under the weight of the car I could accept it as negligence. But to me this is just a simple case of the driver not seeing the hazard - They were negligent and not paying attention. Surely just the fact that there are major roadworks and other holes visible there. Should make any driver proceed with caution ?

I agree the motorist does have some degree of responsibility and needs to to drive with caution,but there simply shouldn't be open/uncovered ,unmarked holes in the road. (That is open for public use)
Ultimately that is down to the construction company...or failing that the local highway/council department
the motorist,cyclists,pedestrians,soi dogs have the least degree of responsibility for falling down these death traps. [emoji33]

i ( and I'm sure all here) see atrocious road behavior every day, with two designated lanes being turned into five lanes of  mayhem by impatient drivers.

 

meanwhile, I sit patiently in the traffic jam at chalong circle ( underpass construction zone), waiting my turn to move forward, with camera ready, just in case some idiot does exactly this type of thing, for my entertainment.
