Best UK Bank whilst living in Thailand
retarius replied to Karlo's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I'm with Nat West, been with them since I got my first grant cheque at Uni in 1971. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. -
What's behind the current THB strength?
retarius replied to KhunBENQ's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I think the West is coming to an end. Choice between word sales hyena Harris and Trump for leader of the Western world. It survived the first Trump presidency but was in decent shape then, I can't see it surviving Harris or Trump, at least not in a leadership role. I read this morning on Mishtalk that going into COVID the US had a 17% larger economy. It is not 30% bigger despite having 100 or so million less people. (note he didn't mention it but I think the 2 trillion economy of the UK leaving the EU is responsible for part of the US apparent gain). Productivity in the EU is a disaster....he cites a figure of 47% lower than US, but doesn't say where the data source is. The EU doesn't have long to last, even if the US does. -
I never heard of Church's either. Ate at KFC once and hated the stuff. Never eaten at Popeye's but have seen it somewhere.

I never ate it either, I don't eat American fast food....I can't stand the smell.

No definitely a gift, she should keep it. -
Do you want President Harris to pardon Trump?
retarius replied to earlinclaifornia's topic in Political Soapbox
Presidential pardons are a travesty of justice. Who get pardoned? The rich, the famous, the related, and most perniciously, politicians. -
The TRD will handle taxes covered by DTAs under the rules of the DTAs from each individual country which are likely not to be the same from each country. The Thai's 'new' proposals have not been elucidated in enough depth for anyone to know exactly what will happen to them individually. The only safe way to avoid extra taxes is to be a non resident for tax purposes i.e. less than 180 days a year (179 max). I have chosen this route and am implementing it in 2024 so that I don't have to file a tax return for 2023. Once you file a tax return you are in the TRD system, such as it is, and will be open too questions from the TRD for ever more. I'm not going to risk it, but the costs of living outside Thailand if you don't have a second home could overwhelm any tax savings you might make. When the rules are crystal clear I will have tax accountants here calculate how much I will owe here, if anything by staying year round. But rules can always change and there is nothing to stop a hard-up government spending the people's money like crazy on monumentally stupid schemes like the digital wallet and land bridge, to increase tax rates in the future.

Garbage Republicans Slither Out To Endorse Harris
retarius replied to DougieMax's topic in Political Soapbox
Time softens some stances. I was sure when I first heard GWB speaking that he was the biggest idiot on the planet. Now I'm not so sure, Harris is a moron. -
Bhumjaithai Party Opposes Casinos in Entertainment Complexes
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Well done Anutin. I have despised you ever since your rant about foreigners and masks in the COVID era. You were wrong about weed, sorry. But you are right about gambling. It is a curse on poor people, and has no place in Thailand. Glamourising it by making such a big issue and sticking casinos in 'entertainment complexes' is a big mistake that will add to human misery in Thailand. -

Western Union better than “Wise”
retarius replied to Everyman's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I only used Western Union once.....about 15 years ago......actually my wife used it but I was standing next to her. She sent a small sum from Tokyo to Thailand. Total take from WU was 32% vs spot rate. I told her never to use the pos service again. -
What you are telling us is that increases are coming.

PM Paetongtarn's Policy Statement critisised as Echo of Thaksin’s Vision
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It wouldn't be at all bad if it came from Thaksin if it was a good plan that would lift the economy. They face is that it is a poor plan that has no scope to improve Thailand's dire economic straits for the long term, everything is hanging on the digital wallet giveaway, a monumental stupidity. It has been shown over and over again that short term helicopter money does no long term good for an economy. It is simply a bad plan, whomever dreamed it up. -
Thailand's New PM Outlines Bold 10-Point Plan to Revamp Economy
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
There's little to disagree with except that she is doing nothing at all for the economy. The digital wallet is a stupid gimmick that will inject a small amount into the economy, and load the country down with debt that will impede real investment in the future. Modernizing agriculture means making much larger and more efficient farms that can use machines instead of humans to do the work (like they do in other countries). This will create a whole slew of problems....big agricultural firms will then own all the farmland having picked the current owners off. Yes agriculture will be more efficient but the country will be left with tens of millions of landless, jobless workers. A full 50% of the workforce is supposedly involved in agriculture....50% who will all move to Bangkok creating slums while looking for work. Flat rate electric fares....how will the government fixing train fare stimulate the economy? How will combating crime and drug trafficking (however desirable you might think it) stimulate the economy? Do criminals not spend the profits they make from crime....they do, they buy big houses and fancy cars. New constitutions might make the country more democratic, but that hasn't happened in a long time. Constitutions are drafted so that those in power stay in power. The don't improve the economy either. New tax systems are needed to fund the massively growing debt that the country is starting to accumulate. Once countries get into debt they only ever get deeper into debt, they never manage to pay it off. Sadly foreigners will be included in the system of tax paying. It will affect me adversely and force me inconveniently to become a permanent tax exile.....but someone has to pay taxes, why should farangs get a free ride? Plus when designing tax systems, the designers come to realise the one solid, true, hard fact, and that is you can only get taxes out of people who have money those without money ie as mentioned above the 50% of folks in the country working for 2-300 baht a day in agriculture cannot pay taxes and eat....they will choose to eat, not to pay taxes. Whether farangs pay taxes will depend on whether they think they will get caught evading taxes (a crime) and what the penalties are. Altogether a total disappointment that the number one issue facing the country, ie the economy is completely ignored by the government. Thailand is set to go right down the toilet. Along with becoming a tax exile, I will be taking steps to protect my bank deposits, hard times will bring out the corruption in the banks (and I make the assumption, that of every institution I know of is corrupt, and it is, then some banks will more than likely be corrupt as well). -

BBC Chairman Calls For a Thorough Review of Israel-Hamas War Bias
retarius replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I would have said the BBC is overtly biased toward Israel. To mention the many vile atrocities of Israel is somehow anathema to the BBC. Last week or so, the Beeb published the story about 6 Israeli hostages who had been killed and then recovered inn Israeli raid. They gave front page cover to the story with photos of each victim, and a bio about each one of a paragraph in length. Contrast this to the recent bombing of a school by Israel....14 dead including some UN workers, and not a mention of the victims names or bios. -
Revisiting History: The Unlikely Campaign to Vilify Winston Churchill
retarius replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Racist, fascist, horrible person....and don't forget his pig ignorant stubbornness over the Dardanelles that cost over hundred thousand Anzac lives. He didn't 'win the war'. 75% of German resources were in the East fighting Russia....the western front was totally pacified with only token German resources. Russia did the heavy lifting, the Brits and the Yanks coasted through a token resistance then stole the glory.
