  10. Thailand celebrates a number of festivals throughout the year, including the beautiful Loy Krathong festival. Known as Thailand’s Festival of Lights, Loy Krathong is one of the biggest celebrations on the Thai calendar. This picturesque festival is a time for people to gather around rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water to release lotus-shaped rafts onto the water. Today, the festival also features spectacular performances, beauty pageants, and fireworks. If you want to join the celebrations, here’s everything you need to know about Loy Krathong. What is Loy Krathong? Loy Kratong, which translates to “floating banana tree trunk,” is a festival where people gather along Thailand’s riverbanks to float banana trunks. The banana trunks (Krathong) are typically shaped like a lotus and decorated with flowers, incense, candles, personal items, and craft-store buys. Advertisements The history and reason behind this beautiful festival are complex. It’s believed that Loy Krathong originated in Sukhothai, an ancient city situated around five hours from Bangkok. The festival is not necessarily a religious holiday. For some people, however, it’s a day to pray and give gratitude to the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha, as well as to ask for forgiveness for using too much water or for polluting the water as they float their banana trunks into the rivers. Many people also believe that floating Krathong is a symbolic way to brush off bad luck, let go of anger or grudges, and cleanse misdoings and misfortunes from the past to start anew and free of negative feelings. If your candle stays lit until you can’t see your Krathong, it means that you’ll have a year of good luck. If not, well, better luck next time. Thai people traditionally release their Krathong into the rivers and small canals. However, today, people also release the Krathong into a lake or pond. With thousands of lightened banana trunk boats floating down waterways in Thailand, Loy Krathong is definitely one of the most enchanting festivals in the country. Besides releasing Krathong, the festival is also full of many fun performances. You can see and hear fireworks, stroll around streets filled with a lineup of vendors, parades, and even beauty pageants known as “Noppharat Queen Contests.” It’s common to see Thais wearing traditional Thai clothing during the festival. PHOTO: Loy Krathong. Merdeka. When is Loy Krathong? Loy Krathong is celebrated on the 12th full moon of the Thai lunar calendar. Therefore, the date can change every year depending on the full moon. It usually falls at the end of the rainy season or in the month of November. This year, Loy Krathong will take place on the evening of Friday, November 19. The festival usually starts in the evening. Although the mass release of Krathong occurs on Loy Krathong day, the celebrations can continue for several more days. The festival can go on for 5 days in Sukhothai and 3 days in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Where to go during Loy Krathong? Loy Krathong is celebrated throughout Thailand, so you can go to any body of water in the country to enjoy the festival. Thais eager to float their Krathong and pay their respects to the goddess of water will gather around almost every river, canal, pond, lake, and other body of water. However, if you want to enjoy an extra magical experience, the following cities have the liveliest Loy Krathong festivals: 1. Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is the best place to go for a truly mesmerising Loy Krathong Festival experience. Aside from Loy Krathong, the city also holds the Yi Peng Festival on the same day. The Yi Peng Festival, also known as Thailand Sky Lantern Festival, is unique to Northern Thailand. Therefore, you won’t experience the fusion of Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals in any other place around the country. In addition to releasing candlelit banana trunks on the water, people also light and float lanterns into the night sky. As a result, you can experience an enchanting scene that looks like something out of a fairytale. There’s typically an elaborate annual parade during Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai. However, this was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the best places to celebrate Loy Krathong and Yi Peng in Chiang Mai is at the banks of the Ping River. If you want to get the best view, you can watch the celebrations from the Iron Bridge and the Nawarat Bridge. The Phase Gate is also a great place to observe the festivals since the opening ceremony, the start of the parade, and the beauty contest are all held there. You can also visit the Three Kings Monument if you want to see the Lanna Traditional Dance performance and the opening ceremony of the Lightning Candle Tray. If you want to observe the festival from a temple, you can visit Wat Phan Thao. PHOTO: Loi Krathong is fused with Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai. xiaolinzi821/Pixabay. 2. Sukhothai As the birthplace of Loy Krathong, Sukhothai is an incredible place to experience the festival. This ancient city is where you’ll get the most authentic Loy Krathong experience, making it the perfect place to visit if you want to learn more about the legends and history of the joyful festival. Most festival events are held in the Sukhotai Historical Park. Therefore, you’ll get to take in the beautiful floating Krathong while surrounded by magnificent ancient monuments. People in Sukhothai celebrate Loy Krathong for 5 days. Besides the mass release of Krathong, the festival usually features parades, light and sound shows, folk music performances, and a beauty contest. PHOTO: Loy Krathong in Sukhothai. The top venues to visit to enjoy Loy Krathong around the riverside area include Asiatique, Phra Athit Pier, Wat Saket, and Maharaj Lifestyle Mall. Asiatique, the riverfront night market, is especially popular. It’s a great place to visit if you want to experience the festival like a local. Here, you’ll find some of the most incredible shows and one of the biggest crowds across Bangkok. The main event usually includes the retelling of the Loy Krathong history through dance and music and an illuminated Krathong release procession. Besides Asiatique and venues along the Chao Phraya River, many ponds and waterways across the city also become a focal point for people to gather and launch their Krathong. Some of the most popular parks to experience Loy Krathong are Benjasiri Park, Benjakitti Park, and Lumpini Park. You can also visit the city’s temples, such as Wat Pho and Wat Arun, to enjoy the festival. PHOTO: Loy Krathong in Bangkok. Robertpollai/Wikimedia Commons. 4. Phuket Loy Krathong in Phuket is much more laid back when compared to Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Sukhothai. It is the perfect place to go if you want to experience the festival, but not the crowds. You can usually join the celebrations on all waterways and beaches across the island. Some of the popular beaches for the festivals are Nai Harn Beach and Patong Beach. For a more local experience, Kata Beach, Karon Beach, Suan Luang Park, and Saphan Hin Park are great places to visit. PHOTO: Floating Krathong. Fun facts about Loy Krathong 1. Loy Krathong is considered Thailand’s Valentine’s Day Although Thai people largely celebrate Loy Krathong to worship the goddess of water, it’s also regarded as a version of Valentine’s Day in Thailand. Since the olden days, the festival has been the time for singles to socialise and meet new people for the first time. Some believe that they will meet their soulmates during the festival. As for couples, the festival is a time to wish for long-lasting love and happiness. Many couples make or buy their Krathong together. They also light the candles and incense, then release their Krathong together as they make a wish for their happiness. Many people believe that if the candle stays lit until their Krathong is out of sight, their love will last forever. 2. You can decorate your Krathong however you want Krathong is made from a banana tree trunk shaped into a lotus by using folded banana leaves and decorated with flowers. People use banana tree trunk and leaves because the tropical plant is biodegradable. They’ll turn into fish food within a few days. In addition, the trunk can float well on water because it’s airy and light. Traditionally, people place a lit candle and 3 sticks of incense in the centre of Krathong. Flowers, candles, and incense sticks are all Buddhist symbols. The flowers represent the worship of the Buddha, the candle symbolises wisdom and knowledge, and the incense represents purity and power. Besides the 3 essential items, how you decorate your Krathong is up to you. Most people add personal items and craft-store buys into their Krathong. Coins might also be added as an offering as a way of making merit, welcome wealth, or honour ancestors. PHOTO: Krathong. naturepost/Pixabay. 3. Putting hair, fingernails, and bits of clothes in Krathongs Besides decorating their Krathongs beautifully, some people also put hair strands, nail clippings, and even bits of clothes into their Krathongs. Putting these interesting things inside their Krathongs is a way to get rid of negative energy from the past, as well as to brush away bad luck and misfortune. 4. Other countries also celebrate Loy Krathong Aside from Thailand, other countries that have significant southeastern Tai cultures also celebrate Loy Krathong. These include Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and some parts of Malaysia like Kelantan and Kedah. 5. The coin collector Since many people place coins in their Krathongs, coin collectors are common. As people float their Krathong away, these coin collectors will dive into the water and stop the Krathong to take the coin. Some people find this act appalling. However, others see it in a more positive light – you’re actually making merit by allowing the collectors to take the coins. PHOTO: People may add coins to their Krathong. jcomp/freepik. A step-by-step guide to renewing road tax Photo via: Andrea Piacquadio from pexels.com Renewing road tax in Thailand involves a few key steps to ensure legal compliance and avoid penalties. Follow this detailed guide to navigate the process efficiently. Advertisements Step 1: Purchase compulsory insurance (Por Ror Bor) The first requirement for renewing your road tax is purchasing compulsory motor insurance, commonly referred to as Por Ror Bor. This insurance is crucial for covering third-party liabilities in the event of an accident, ensuring that you’re legally protected while on the road. You can easily obtain Por Ror Bor from a variety of providers, including insurance companies, banks, or directly at Department of Land Transport (DLT) offices. Make sure to compare options if you wish to find the best coverage for your needs at a competitive price. Without valid compulsory insurance, your road tax renewal cannot proceed. Step 2: Complete a vehicle inspection (if required) For vehicles that are over seven years old, a roadworthy inspection is mandatory before you can renew your road tax. These inspections are designed to verify that the vehicle meets safety and environmental standards, ensuring that it is safe to be on the road. The inspection can be carried out at any authorised inspection centre or DLT-approved location. During this process, inspectors will examine various aspects of your vehicle, including brakes, lights, emissions, and overall mechanical condition. It’s advisable to schedule this inspection well ahead of your road tax renewal date to avoid any last-minute issues. Step 3: Make payment for annual road tax Once you have your insurance and have passed the vehicle inspection (if applicable), you can proceed to pay the road tax. The fee varies depending on factors such as your vehicle’s type and engine capacity. For instance, larger vehicles may incur higher fees compared to smaller ones. You have the option to make the payment online via the DLT eService platform for convenience, or you can visit DLT offices or kiosks in person. If you prefer online payment, you will need to register and log in to the platform, provide the necessary details, and follow the prompts to complete the payment. It’s important to pay on time to avoid penalties or legal consequences such as fines or suspension of your already registered vehicles. Step 4: Obtain your road tax sticker After successfully paying the road tax, the final step is to obtain your road tax sticker. This sticker serves as proof that you have completed all necessary steps to legally operate your vehicle on Thai roads. Once issued, the road tax sticker must be affixed to your vehicle’s windshield or any clearly visible area, depending on the type of vehicle. Displaying the sticker correctly is crucial, as traffic officers may conduct checks to ensure that all vehicles on the road have valid documentation. Failure to display the sticker could result in fines or penalties. Additional tips for smooth road tax renewal Plan ahead: Start the renewal process early, especially if a vehicle inspection is needed. Inspections may take some time depending on the availability of authorised centres. Keep documents handy: Ensure that you have all the necessary documents, such as your current registration papers, proof of insurance, and inspection certificate, if applicable. 12. Ranked as the 6th most expat-friendly country globally, Thailand offers a welcoming environment for international citizens, though some legal restrictions do apply. While Thai law places certain limitations on foreign ownership and investment, these regulations vary depending on the type of asset or business venture you’re interested in. Whether you’re an expat looking to invest in Thailand or planning to purchase significant assets, this article will give you the inside scope of what can a foreigner own in Thailand. In Thailand, foreign ownership can be divided into three main categories: condominium and property ownership, land ownership, and business ownership. Advertisements What businesses can foreigners own in Thailand? Doing business can be a bit tricky since the Thai government have rules and regulations to ensure Thai citizens have crucial jobs. Thailand’s Foreign Business Act (FBA) B.E. 2542 (1999) categorises businesses into three distinct groups, each with its own set of restrictions and requirements for foreign ownership and operation. Image via Unsplashed by Adeolu Eletu Category 1 (prohibited business) Businesses in this category are exclusively owned by Thai nationals, and although it has been reported some can still manage to do it legally most of the percentage will have to be given up. These businesses are protected as it is considered vital to Thailand’s national interests, security, and cultural heritage, and thus, the government restricts foreign involvement to protect these areas. Some of the businesses are : Broadcasting services Operating radio and television broadcasting services Banking and finance Establishing banks, financial institutions, or securities firms Education services Running certain types of educational institutions, such as universities, without specific permissions Telecommunication Ownership and operation of telecommunications services. Category 2 (restricted business) Restricted Businesses in Thailand are sectors do allow foreign ownership and participation but with specific limitations. While foreigners can operate these businesses, they must follow strict rules that protect Thai nationals’ interests. Some of the businesses in this category are : Restaurants & bars Establishing dining establishments and nightlife venues. Image via Unsplashed by Jakub Zerdzicki As of 2024, Thailand does not allow foreigners and expats to own land. However, there are alternative options like a long-term lease normally about 30 years. Additionally, foreigners also have several options for property ownership in Thailand. Another option is establishing a Thai company, where Thai nationals must hold at least 51% ownership. Additionally, foreigners can invest in sectors promoted by the Board of Investment (BOI), which may grant special ownership rights. Each of these options provides different opportunities for foreign investment in Thai property. Can foreigners own agricultural land in Thailand? Image via unsplashed by Dennis Rochel Foreigners are generally prohibited from owning agricultural land outright. However, some exceptions are rare and typically involve collaborating with Thai majority-owned companies or qualifying under specific investment promotions like the BOI. Under the Thai Land Code (agricultural Standards Act, B.E. 2551), foreigners are prohibited from holding title deeds for agricultural land, including rice fields, orchards, and plantations. This restriction aims to prevent excessive foreign ownership that could outbusiness the livelihoods of Thai farmers. If you do plan to invest in this sector, engaging in agricultural land arrangements in Thailand requires meticulous attention to legal and financial details, making it highly recommended for expatriates to consult with Thai legal experts or property consultants to navigate the complexities of land laws and ensure all transactions comply with Thai regulations. Can foreigners own properties in Thailand? Image by Artur Kornakov from Unsplash According to the Foreign Business Act (FBA) and the Condominium Act B.E. 2522 (1979), foreigners have the right to own condominium units in Thailand, subject to certain conditions. The key regulation is the foreign quota, which limits foreign ownership to 49% of the total unit area in any condominium building. This ensures Thai nationals maintain majority ownership, in line with national property policies. Additionally, the unit must be officially classified as a condominium under Thai law. It’s important to note that units classified as land-based properties or those including significant land ownership are subject to stricter regulations and are generally not available for foreign ownership. In Thailand, foreign ownership is regulated through clear categories. While foreigners can own condominium units up to a 49% quota, direct land ownership is prohibited, with alternatives like long-term leases and Thai majority-owned companies available. Business ventures are divided into prohibited, restricted, and non-restricted categories under the Foreign Business Act, each with specific requirements for foreign participation. These regulations and professional legal advice are essential for navigating Thailand’s property and business landscape successfully. By following these laws, expatriates can effectively invest and thrive in Thailand’s economy. FAQS Can foreigners own a vehicle in Thailand? Yes, foreigners can fully own vehicles in Thailand, including cars, motorcycles, and boats. The ownership process is similar to that for Thai nationals and involves registering the vehicle with the Thai Department of Land Transport. Foreigners must provide necessary documentation such as a valid passport, visa, and proof of address. Additionally, all vehicles must comply with Thai vehicle regulations, including safety and emission standards. How can a foreigner establish a Thai majority-owned company? Foreigners looking to establish a Thai majority-owned company must ensure that Thai nationals hold at least 51% of the company's shares. This involves registering the company with the Thai Department of Business Development (DBD) and adhering to Thai corporate laws. The process includes drafting a memorandum of association, setting up a registered office, and fulfilling minimum capital requirements, which vary depending on the business sector. Consulting with a Thai legal expert or business consultant is highly recommended to navigate the complexities of company registration and compliance. Are there any restrictions on the number of condominiums a foreigner can own in Thailand? There is no specific limit on the number of condominium units a foreigner can own in Thailand, provided that the 49% foreign ownership quota in the condominium building is not exceeded. This means that as long as the total area owned by foreigners remains below 49% of the entire building, a foreigner can purchase multiple units across different projects or within the same building, subject to availability and compliance with all regulations. Can foreigners inherit property in Thailand? Yes, foreigners can inherit property in Thailand if they are named as beneficiaries in a will. However, inheriting land still falls under the same restrictions as direct ownership, meaning the foreign heir cannot own the land outright. Instead, they may need to transfer the land through leasehold agreements or other legal structures, ensuring compliance with Thai property laws. Can foreigners renovate or modify their owned condominium units? Yes, foreigners can renovate or modify their owned condominium units in Thailand, provided that the renovations comply with the building's rules and regulations set by the condominium management. Any structural changes typically require approval from the condominium's committee or management board. It's important to review the condominium's bylaws and obtain necessary permissions before undertaking any major modifications. From an original article by The Thaiger

  14. I would recommend buying any supplements in from iHerb Good price, recognised brands, fast delivery, although you will pay a little more due to import duties (which you pay as you purchase) Im my opinion much safer way to buy given the amount of copies and inferior products etc that can be found on many platforms.
  15. As we get older, preserving our strength, mobility, and overall health becomes increasingly important, and resistance or free weight training is one of the best ways to achieve these goals. Far beyond just building muscle, regular strength training has proven benefits for bone density, metabolic health, cognitive function, and even longevity. Here’s why resistance training is crucial as we age and how it can significantly enhance quality of life. 1. Preserving Muscle Mass and Strength With age, we naturally lose muscle mass in a process called sarcopenia, which can begin as early as our 30s and accelerates with each passing decade. Loss of muscle not only affects appearance but also impacts balance, mobility, and overall functional ability. Resistance training—using weights, resistance bands, or even body weight exercises—helps slow or even reverse this muscle loss, preserving the strength needed for everyday activities. Maintaining muscle mass helps with tasks as simple as lifting groceries or getting up from a chair, contributing to prolonged independence. Key Benefit: Helps prevent sarcopenia and retain physical independence. 2. Boosting Bone Density As we age, bone density naturally declines, making bones more brittle and increasing the risk of fractures, especially in areas like the hips, wrists, and spine. Weight-bearing exercises encourage the bones to adapt by becoming denser, which reduces the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. In particular, compound movements like squats, deadlifts, and weighted lunges are excellent for strengthening bones in the lower body and spine, areas prone to fractures in older adults. Key Benefit: Reduces risk of osteoporosis and fractures. 3. Enhancing Metabolism and Weight Control Metabolism also slows with age, often leading to weight gain and increased fat mass. Strength training is particularly effective for revving up metabolism since building muscle mass naturally requires the body to burn more calories, even at rest. By increasing lean muscle mass, resistance training can help counteract the metabolic slowdown, assisting with weight management and reducing risks associated with obesity, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Key Benefit: Supports metabolism and helps control weight. 4. Supporting Joint Health and Reducing Arthritis Symptoms Strength training strengthens not only muscles but also the tendons and ligaments around joints, helping to stabilize them and reduce strain. By strengthening these supportive tissues, resistance training can alleviate joint pain and improve range of motion, which is especially valuable for those with arthritis. In fact, studies show that moderate resistance training can reduce symptoms of arthritis, making everyday movements more comfortable. Key Benefit: Protects and strengthens joints, potentially reducing arthritis pain. 5. Improving Mental Health and Cognitive Function Strength training isn’t just beneficial for the body; it’s great for the mind as well. Studies suggest that resistance training can improve cognitive function, memory, and mood, likely by enhancing blood flow to the brain and increasing levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports brain health. Additionally, the sense of accomplishment from lifting heavier weights over time can boost confidence, reduce symptoms of depression, and alleviate anxiety. Key Benefit: Supports mental well-being and cognitive health. 6. Enhancing Balance and Reducing Fall Risk Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, often due to decreased muscle strength, balance, and coordination. Strength training helps enhance stability and proprioception (awareness of body position), which improves balance and reduces the risk of falls. Exercises that target the legs and core, such as lunges, step-ups, and planks, are especially effective in building stability and coordination, which are essential for fall prevention. Key Benefit: Improves balance and reduces fall risk, promoting safety. 7. Promoting Longevity and Quality of Life Research shows that adults who engage in regular strength training tend to live longer and experience a higher quality of life. By reducing risks of chronic conditions, improving physical function, and supporting mental health, resistance training can have a holistic impact on health that extends beyond physical appearance. Men who regularly perform strength training report feeling more energetic, resilient, and capable, supporting a positive, active lifestyle well into older age. Key Benefit: Contributes to longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life. Getting Started with Resistance Training For older adults new to resistance training, starting slowly with lighter weights or resistance bands and focusing on proper form is key. Ideally, consult with a trainer or physical therapist to learn the right techniques and create a program tailored to individual fitness levels and goals. Resistance training can be done 2-3 times a week, allowing at least 48 hours of recovery time between sessions to give muscles time to repair and grow stronger. Examples of Effective Exercises: Lower Body: Squats, lunges, leg press Upper Body: Bicep curls, overhead presses, rows Core: Planks, Russian twists, leg raises Conclusion Strength training is an essential component of a healthy aging routine. It supports muscle and bone health, helps maintain a healthy metabolism, and offers cognitive and emotional benefits, all of which contribute to a fuller, healthier life. Along with the right supplements tailored to the needs of older men, resistance training can enhance well-being in profound ways, empowering older adults to live active, engaged lives well into their later years.

A Cautionary Note on Supplements in Thailand While Thailand offers a wide variety of supplements, it's essential for expats to exercise caution when purchasing them. The supplement industry is largely unregulated, meaning that product quality can vary significantly. In markets and stores, you may encounter low-cost supplements that are poorly manufactured, lack potency, or even contain undisclosed or harmful additives. To ensure safety and effectiveness, it's best to look for established brands that are third-party tested, ensuring they meet quality standards and contain exactly what they claim on the label. Recognized retailers and certified pharmacies are generally more reliable sources than street vendors or online marketplaces, where counterfeit and substandard products are common. Supplements like Ashwagandha, Tongkat Ali, and Panax Ginseng—though beneficial—should ideally be purchased from reputable brands to guarantee quality and purity. Remember, investing in high-quality products may cost a bit more upfront, but it supports both your health and peace of mind in the long run. For additional guidance, consult a healthcare provider familiar with your health profile and the specific benefits and risks of each supplement.
  17. As we age, our bodies undergo numerous changes that can impact our nutritional needs and overall health. Key Benefits: Improves digestive health and regularity Lowers cholesterol and supports heart health Helps manage blood sugar levels Sources: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fiber supplements such as psyllium Learn more about Fiber: NIH Fiber Overview 10. Zinc Why it’s important: Zinc is essential for immune function, wound healing, and DNA synthesis. Key Benefits: Enhances immune function and reduces infection risk Supports wound healing and skin health May protect eye health and vision Sources: Meat, shellfish, legumes, seeds, nuts, and dairy Learn more about Zinc: NIH Zinc Overview While a balanced diet is always the foundation of good health, supplements can be a valuable tool for addressing specific health needs in people over 50. Whether it’s supporting bone health, reducing inflammation, or improving energy, the right supplements can help support a healthy, active lifestyle. Always consult with a healthcare professional before beginning any new supplement regimen, particularly if you’re managing existing health conditions or taking medications.

  21. No it hasnt "always been" at all, when a new theme is adopted, there are literally 100's of setting that need to be done, some are "default" and can be adjusted as required, this theme is new and the setting you describe is default, we can change it if enough people request it, so far it seems you are the only one, possibly 2 in this thread of thousands of users. So, we are not tying to "fix" anything.
  22. Not really, once again, it depends on personal preference, if topics are ,multple pages, then people rarely start at the beginning and work through, in most cases of multiple pages, they read the title, then the last page, and join in. Of course its different if the topic is only 2 or 3 pages, but in any event there are easy navigation arrows where you land to go back to start or even a specific page.
  23. And as this topic demonstrates, some do some don't, you can never please everyone all the time. 🙂
  24. It can take you to the OP, to the last post or the last unread post. If its a new topic its probably 1 page anyway, if its multiple pages there are navigation arrows to take you back to the start.Currently it takes you to where you can post.
