  9. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says he wants to build a team around Bruno Guimaraes after it emerged the Brazil midfielder's £100m release clause expires this summer. Guimaraes, 26, has been one of Newcastle's standout players this season and has been linked with Manchester City and Arsenal. He signed a new five-year contract in October 2023, having impressed following a move from Lyon in January 2022. Howe wants Guimaraes to stay but admitted Newcastle were "not in control" because of the clause, which expires at the end of June. "Having that [release clause] was well planned and structured by the club," said Howe on Friday. "We don’t want constant speculation, it’s not healthy for the player or for us. It goes without saying we want to keep him, I want to build our team around him. "His form has been very good and he seems very happy and settled. "He’ll be thinking about a very busy summer ahead, where hopefully we can take the team - with him a big part of it. But we aren’t in control of that so let’s see." Newcastle, who are involved in a race with Manchester United to finish sixth, will relegate bottom club Sheffield United if they beat the Blades at St James' Park on Saturday (15:00 BST). The Magpies are seventh in the table, three points behind sixth-placed Manchester United with five games left. England forward Callum Wilson could make his first start since 10 February after returning from injury in the 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Wednesday. "He came through fine, I thought he looked good and worked well with the lads around him," added Howe. READ MORE
  10. Mikel Arteta's decision to name Martin Odegaard as Arsenal captain in July 2022 was met with some scepticism at the time, but it has proved to be a stroke of genius. The 25-year-old has led by example both on and off the field and could become the first Gunners captain to lift the Premier League title since Patrick Vieira in 2004. Since arriving at Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in January 2021, initially on loan, Odegaard has made a huge impact in north London. BBC Sport looks at how the influence of Odegaard, who also captains his country Norway, has continued to grow during the Gunners' title-chasing campaign. A decade ago, it was Arsenal boss Arteta who captained the Gunners for two seasons until his retirement in 2016, making him one of the best judges of character for assigning Odegaard to the role. The Norwegian took over following the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and interim captain Alexandre Lacazette. When Odegaard was appointed skipper, Arteta said: "What I've seen over the past 18 months since he's been with us, he's represented the values of this football club, the team, the team-mates and the staff in the best possible way. "He's also the captain of his national team and I think it was the right call, and I'm proud to announce that because I think he's a really good person to deliver that commitment to the club." But it was a decision that came as a surprise to some supporters. "I was a bit taken aback, purely based on his age," says Arsenal fan and YouTuber Pippa Monique. READ MORE
  11. The Chicago Bears made Caleb Williams the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft as teams went quarterback crazy in Detroit. The 22-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most talented players to come out of college for years, was one of a record six quarterbacks taken in the first 12 picks. No defensive players were taken in the top 10 for the first time in NFL Draft history, as the night started with 14 straight offensive players being chosen. A record 250,000 fans packed out downtown Detroit for the first round of the draft, which continues with six further rounds of selection across Friday and Saturday. READ MORE
  12. Seven-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan believes he is capable of winning a world title in his 50s after he thrashed Jackson Page 10-1 to reach the last 16 at the 2024 event. O'Sullivan, 48, is already the oldest snooker world champion after winning in 2022, aged 46, and would need to lift the trophy again in 2026 or later to become the first winner aged 50 or over. "I know the ability is there - it's just finding the right formula," O'Sullivan told BBC Two. "I've already broken the rules for snooker. I'm still going at 48, 49 and I'm seeing what's possible now. "Can I win a World Championship at 50, who knows? I'm probably the only player able to do that but let's see, let's have an experiment." O'Sullivan is aiming to win his eighth title and move clear of Stephen Hendry's mark of seven Crucible successes in the 1990s, and he began Thursday's play with an emphatic 8-1 lead over his 22-year-old opponent. A break of 79 took O'Sullivan one frame away and he clinched victory soon after. He will now play another Welsh player in Ryan Day, who defeated 15th seed Barry Hawkins 10-8 in Wednesday's evening session. Last-16 matches are best of 25 frames, so first to 13, and the first session of O'Sullivan's match against Day will take place on Sunday (10:00 BST), with the match then resuming later that day at 19:00 before being played to a finish on Monday afternoon (14:30). O'Sullivan's winning margin was the joint largest at this year's competition, matching Kyren Wilson's 10-1 victory over Dominic Dale. READ MORE

  16. Crystal Palace's French winger Michael Olise, 22, would be open to a summer transfer to Manchester United. (90min) Manchester United are confident a bid of between £60-70m will be enough to sign English defender Jarrad Branthwaite, 21, before 30 June, allowing Everton to include the fee in their 2023-24 accounts and avoid any further points deductions. (Football Insider) Arsenal and Manchester City have been made aware that Newcastle United will listen to offers in excess of £80m for Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, 26, this summer. (90min) Guimaraes' £100m release clause will only be active for one month, from late May to late June. (Fabrizio Romano, via Caught Offside) Manchester United could look to sign 22-year-old Spanish left-back Miguel Gutierrez from Girona but they face competition from Arsenal and West Ham. (GiveMeSport) Arsenal are tracking multiple midfield targets amid concerns a deal for Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi, 25, could be difficult. (Standard) Zubimendi says reports linking him to some of Europe's top clubs "are just rumours" and he is happy at Real Sociedad. (Marca - in Spanish) Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino's position will be reviewed at the end of the season but most of the Blues squad do not want him sacked as they look for more stability at the club. (Standard) Manchester United will target a new centre-back, central midfielder and striker in the summer transfer window, with France forward Anthony Martial, 28, among the players no longer part of the club's plans. 17. Teenager Luke Littler won his third night of the Premier League season with a comfortable 6-2 win over Rob Cross in Liverpool. Littler has become a fan favourite across the UK, but with the 17-year-old a fan of Manchester United he was roundly booed by the 8,500-capacity crowd. He played up to it though, often cupping his hands to his ears, and signalling 2-0 to the crowd ahead of his quarter-final in response to Liverpool's defeat at Everton on Wednesday. Littler, who beat Gerwyn Price and Nathan Aspinall to reach the final, raced into a five-leg lead in the final before seeing out the win after a brief Cross fightback. Littler tops the table from world champion Luke Humphries and is now practically assured of his place in the play-offs at London's O2 Arena on 23 May. "I knew what was coming this week and I was building up to it," Littler told Sky Sports. "I always engage with the crowd and the semi-final I was playing with complete freedom. "I just felt comfortable tonight. I knew what was coming and I was glad to win." READ MORE
  18. If Arsenal hoped Brighton would seek out and exploit flaws in Manchester City’s make-up in the same manner Everton brutally exposed Liverpool’s, they were to be sorely disappointed. And this is because, at this stage of the Premier League season when the big prize is in sight and the pressure is at its height, the reigning champions rarely show any signs of weakness. Arsenal fulfilled their part of the bargain by thrashing Chelsea 5-0 at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday before Liverpool subsided in the Goodison Park hothouse 24 hours later. The Gunners remain top of the table in a position they would have signed up for instantly at the start of the season, but the manner of City’s demolition of Brighton on this soggy night on the south coast sounded an ominous note for anyone wishing to wrestle away their crown. 19. There’s no mercy in sports. The Kuwait under-18 men’s hockey team just found out the hard way. At the opening game of this year’s IIHF U18 Asian and Oceanic championship that started Tuesday in Uzbekistan, Kuwait, making its debut in the tournament, was humiliated with a 57-0 loss to Thailand. According to a report by the Daily Faceoff, Kuwait managed only one shot on goal the entire game — a breakaway that was stopped — compared to 122 shots by Thailand. Natapat Patong led the way in the scoring avalanche, registering seven goals and 13 points. Two other players scored seven goals each while six of Patong’s teammates also had double-digit point outputs in the contest. After the game, both teams removed their helmets and shook hands. Ironically, Thailand has had its fair share of crushing losses on the international stage over the years. The country holds the record for the most-degrading defeat in IIHF history when lost 92-0 to South Korea during this same tournament in 1998 — that’s more than 1.5 goals per minute. High scoring at international ice hockey competitions is not surprising given the discrepancy in talent that some countries possess compared to others. Here are a few other times the score was so lopsided, you could hardly believe it: Slovakia beat Bulgaria 82-0 at the 2010 Olympic women’s ice hockey qualifications. Kazakhstan beat Iceland 63-0 at the 1998 European under-18 championship. Japan beat Thailand 58-0 at the 1998 under-18 Asian and Oceanic championship. Australia beat New Zealand 58-0 at the 1987 men’s world championship. Kazakhstan beat Thailand 52-1 in men’s hockey at the 2007 Asian Winter Games. Romania beat New Zealand 52-1 at the 1989 men’s world championship. Iceland beat Armenia 50-0 at the 2006 world junior championship. Mexico beat Armenia 48-0 at the 2005 world championship. Canada beat Denmark 47-0 at the 1947 world championship. FULL STORY
